Lincoln College invites applications for a 3-hour Stipendiary Lectureship in Physics, starting 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, to cover short-term teaching needs in the subject. The post is available from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027 and is not renewable.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach an average of 3 hours per week. The lecturer will be ideally expected to teach the topics: 2nd year A2 Electromagnetism and Optics, and 3rd year B4 Particle Physics, however applicants who could offer other topics from the 2nd and 3rd year Physics curriculum would also be considered. Applicants should indicate which courses they would be able to offer. Applicants will have, or will be in the final stages of completing a doctorate in Physics, and
will be likely to have teaching experience, at undergraduate level, in Physics.

Duties
Under the direction of the Senior Subject Tutor, you will be expected to:
- Give tutorials on a range of papers as detailed above during each Full Term (1st Week to 8th Week inclusive), up to 3 weighted hours per week averaged over 8 weeks; this includes preparation, setting and marking of written work.
- Assist with the organization of teaching within the subject and arrange teaching for students of the College reading Physics, including arranging for tutors of other colleges to take students for certain specialist papers.
- Monitor students’ academic progress and welfare.
- Set and mark termly Collections, as required.
- Submit accurate and timely teaching records each term via TMS, the Oxford Colleges on-line reporting system for tuition.
- Submit meaningful and specific written reports on each student taught, similarly using TMS, by the Monday of 8th week of each term.
- Attend termly progress meetings for each student of the College reading Physics.
- Attend social events with your students, for example Freshers’, Scholars’, and Finalists’ dinners.
- Liaise with other staff and tutors on teaching issues.
- Liaise with other staff and tutors on pastoral issues.
- Recommend relevant books for the Library.
- Assist with the selection of undergraduate students, including participating in Open
Days and access events and assisting with undergraduate admissions, as required.
Remuneration, Right to Work in the UK, and Terms of Employment
The salary offered is in the range £8,453-£9,335 per annum (25% of National Scale Points 23-27,
pro-rated for appointments of less than a year). Applicants will be required to provide original documentation showing their right to work in the UK. Please note that this post is not sponsorable under the UK’s points-based immigration system.
The successful candidate will have the option of becoming, or remaining, a member of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). Other benefits include a small book allowance, currently £126.25per annum, and a hospitality credit, currently £151.00per annum. Common Room Rights are offered, which include 2 meals per week (excluding Domus, Guest, and Dessert nights and Chapter Day dinners), with the right to bring a guest to lunch or dinner at the Lecturer’s own expense.
The appointment will be subject to the receipt of a satisfactory pre-employment health assessment questionnaire and provision of proof of right to work in the UK.
Selection Criteria
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they meet the following selection criteria:
- ·Prior experience of undergraduate-level teaching in Physics, in topics
close to those noted above.
- ·An understanding of the needs of high-achieving undergraduates,
and a commitment to fostering high academic achievement in undergraduates.
- ·Hold, or be close to the completion of, a doctorate in Physics.
- ·Good organizational skills, communication skills, and sensitivity
to deal effectively with pastoral duties.
