Location: (Field Based with UK Travel) 

Salary: Competitive depending on experience 

Hours: Monday to Friday (09:00 to 17:30) with On-call and Overtime as required 

Role Purpose 

The Senior Field Engineer is responsible for delivering high-quality network infrastructure deployments, broadband installations, and engineering projects across the VFAST and Orbital Internet Group estate. 

The role combines technical hands-on engineering, taking ownership of site builds, network upgrades, surveying, equipment configuration, quality assurance, and customer installations. The Senior Field Engineer ensures all work is delivered safely, consistently, and in accordance with company engineering standards and best practices while supporting the development of junior engineers across the region. 

Working across holiday parks, residential developments and commercial sites, the role plays a key part in expanding and maintaining Orbital’s national network infrastructure.

 Key Responsibilities 

Network Infrastructure Builds & Deployments 

  • Deliver new holiday park network deployments and infrastructure expansion projects. 
  • Install and commission wireless distribution networks, fibre infrastructure and access networks. 
  • Build and upgrade cabinets, communications rooms and network infrastructure. 
  • Install, terminate, and test copper and fibre cabling. 
  • Deploy network equipment including routers, switches, wireless access points and backhaul equipment. 
  • Support acquisitions, network migrations and infrastructure refresh programmes. 
  • Ensure all deployments meet company engineering standards. 

Site Surveys & Technical Assessments 

  • Carry out detailed pre and post-installation site surveys. 
  • Validate infrastructure requirements for new developments and expansions. 
  • Assess radio coverage, fibre routes, cabinet locations, and power availability. 
  • Produce accurate survey documentation, photographs, and recommendations. 
  • Identify technical risks and provide practical engineering solutions. 
  • Support solution validation with the Projects and Network Engineering teams. 

Equipment Configuration & Commissioning 

  • Configure and commission routers, switches, wireless equipment and customer edge devices. 
  • Stage equipment prior to deployment using standard configuration templates. 
  • Verify firmware versions and ensure equipment complies with approved build standards. 
  • Perform testing and acceptance prior to handover. 
  • Ensure that all deployed equipment is accurately documented within company systems. 

Customer Installations & Service Delivery 

  • Deliver professional broadband installations into holiday homes, lodges and commercial premises. 
  • Install and align wireless subscriber equipment where required. 
  • Install internal structured cabling, routers, and wireless access points. 
  • Complete provisioning and end-to-end service testing. 
  • Ensure customers receive a professional handover and understand their service. 

 Fault Investigation & Network Maintenance 

  • Diagnose and resolve faults across wireless, fibre and Ethernet infrastructure. 
  • Investigate RF performance, network connectivity, and customer service issues. 
  • Escalate complex issues with detailed diagnostics and recommendations. 
  • Support planned maintenance and out-of-hours engineering activities. 

Engineering Standards & Quality Assurance 

  • Carry out quality inspections of completed installations and infrastructure projects. 
  • Identify opportunities to improve installation methods and technical standards. 
  • Ensure all work complies with health, safety and regulatory requirements. 
  • Promote a right-first-time culture across the engineering team. 

Documentation & Reporting 

  • Complete accurate installation records, survey reports, and commissioning documentation. 
  • Record equipment serial numbers, asset information and materials used. 
  • Maintain engineering documentation to support future maintenance. 
  • Provide technical feedback to improve products, standards, and operational processes. 

Skills & Experience 

Essential 

  • Experience within ISP, telecommunications, or network infrastructure engineering. 
  • Experience delivering wireless and fixed-line broadband deployments. 
  • Understanding of IP networking and Ethernet technologies. 
  • Experience configuring network infrastructure including routers, switches and wireless equipment. 
  • Experience carrying out technical site surveys. 
  • Practical experience with structured cabling, fibre and external infrastructure installations. 
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills. 
  • Excellent customer-facing and communication skills. 
  • Full UK Driving Licence. 
  • Willingness to travel throughout the UK with occasional overnight stays. 

Desirable 

  • Experience deploying holiday park or campus-style networks. 
  • Experience with Ubiquiti, MikroTik and TP-Link networking equipment. 
  • Knowledge of WiMAX, Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint wireless technologies. 
  • Fibre splicing or fibre testing experience. 
  • ECS, IPAF, PASMA, Working at Height, NRSWA or similar industry certifications. 
  • First Aid qualification.
