 Position Overview

 1911 Gold Corporation is seeking an experienced and safety-focused Hoist Mechanic / Hoist Millwright to support the inspection, maintenance, repair, testing, and reliability of mine hoisting systems and associated mechanical equipment at the True North Mine in Bissett, Manitoba.

 

The Hoist Mechanic / Hoist Millwright is responsible for ensuring hoist plants, conveyances, ropes, braking systems, safety devices, and supporting mechanical equipment are maintained in accordance with Manitoba’s Operation of Mines Regulation (M.R. 212/2011), applicable standards, manufacturer requirements, engineering specifications, and company procedures.

 

This position plays a critical role in maintaining the safe and reliable operation of shaft hoisting systems, safeguarding personnel and infrastructure, and supporting efficient underground mining operations. The successful candidate will work closely with Hoist Operators, Maintenance, Electrical, Engineering, Operations, and contractors to maximize equipment reliability and minimize operational downtime.

 

Key Responsibilities

Hoist Maintenance & Operations

  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul mine hoists and associated mechanical systems.
  • Perform preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on:
  • Drum and friction hoists
  • Braking systems
  • Clutches and drives
  • Gearboxes and couplings
  • Headframes and sheaves
  • Conveyances, including cages, skips, and counterweights
  • Loading and dumping systems
  • Rope attachments and guides
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Complete scheduled inspections in accordance with site maintenance standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with annual hoist shutdowns, major rebuilds, equipment overhauls, and shaft rehabilitation projects.
  • Perform operational equipment checks and identify developing mechanical issues before equipment failure occurs.

Compressed Air & Pumping Systems

  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul surface compressed air systems supporting mine and mill operations.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on:
  • Rotary screw air compressors
  • Reciprocating air compressors
  • Air receivers and associated piping
  • Dryer systems and filtration equipment
  • Compressor cooling systems
  • Air distribution networks and pressure-control systems
  • Conduct routine inspections of compressor performance, including temperatures, pressures, oil systems, vibration levels, and safety controls.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair pneumatic pumping systems used for mine dewatering and process applications, including:
  • Double diaphragm pumps
  • Grouting pumps
  • Sludge and sump pumps
  • Air-operated transfer pumps
  • Pump controls and associated piping systems

Regulatory Compliance & Documentation

  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul surface compressed air systems supporting mine and mill operations.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on:
  • Rotary screw air compressors
  • Reciprocating air compressors
  • Air receivers and associated piping
  • Dryer systems and filtration equipment
  • Compressor cooling systems
  • Air distribution networks and pressure-control systems
  • Conduct routine inspections of compressor performance, including temperatures, pressures, oil systems, vibration levels, and safety controls.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair pneumatic pumping systems used for mine dewatering and process applications, including:
  • Double diaphragm pumps
  • Grouting pumps
  • Sludge and sump pumps
  • Air-operated transfer pumps
  • Pump controls and associated piping systems

 

Safety Systems

  • Inspect and test hoist braking systems, limit switches, overwind protection devices, emergency-stop systems, safety interlocks, and other critical safeguards.
  • Verify the proper operation of shaft signaling equipment and mechanical safety systems.
  • Assist with equipment failure investigations and root-cause analyses involving hoisting and related mechanical systems.
  • Follow all lockout/tagout and energy-isolation requirements during maintenance activities.
  • Participate in safety meetings, risk assessments, Job Hazard Analyses, and other site safety initiatives.

 

Preventative Maintenance & Reliability

  • Follow and support established preventative and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Monitor equipment condition and identify developing failures before breakdowns occur.
  • Participate in equipment reliability and continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Recommend equipment upgrades and maintenance improvements to increase reliability and minimize operational downtime.
  • Support equipment lifecycle and replacement planning.
  • Assist with the development, review, and revision of preventative maintenance programs and procedures.

 

Required Experience & Skill Set

  • Minimum5 years of industrial maintenance experience.
  • Journeyperson Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), Interprovincial Red Seal Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), or an equivalent recognized mechanical trade qualification acceptable to 1911 Gold Corporation.
  • Previous experience maintaining mine hoists or other critical lifting systems is preferred.
  • Previous underground mining experience is considered a strong asset.
  • Strong experience with hydraulic, pneumatic, and rotating equipment systems.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities.
  • Experience with precision alignment, vibration management, bearings, gearboxes, and drivetrain maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely troubleshoot complex mechanical equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on equipment reliability and regulatory compliance.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced industrial environment.
  • Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Job Conditions & Work Environment

  • Ability to work safely in an active industrial and underground mining environment.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to climb ladders, headframes, and fixed-access systems.
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
  • Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitive maintenance activities.
  • Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including days and nights.
  • Ability to respond to emergency call-outs when required.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a strong focus on safety and equipment reliability.

Certifications

  • Red Seal Journeyperson Millwright – Industrial Mechanic – Certification (433A) or relevant experience.
  • Ontario Common Core or equivalent mining experience/training from another Canadian province.
  • Fall Protection Certification.
  • Confined Space Certification.
  • Lockout/Tagout Training.
  • WHMIS.
  • First Aid/CPR considered an asset.

Schedule: 14 Days On / 14 Days Off (Days & Nights) 

Work Location: This position is based at the True North Mine site. Camp accommodations and meals are provided during scheduled work rotations.
