The JP Rentals division at Jarvie Plant offers a wide range of vehicles for hire. Our rentals operation runs from depots throughout Scotland and the North of England. The division manages the entire hire process — from initial customer contact and support to the delivery, maintenance, and return of equipment.

Vehicle Mechanics are responsible for ensuring the JP Rentals hire fleet is inspected, serviced, and repaired in accordance with company standards. Due to the fast-paced nature of the hire industry, this role requires adaptability and the ability to respond effectively to changing priorities.

Key Responsibilities Areas

Complete Assigned Jobs:

• Carry out tasks assigned by manager/supervisor, address any outstanding work from previous day.

• Attend to a list of vehicles that are due for repair/service every morning and prepare them for hire.

• Complete job sheets and any other required documentation.

• Escalate issues/concerns to the workshop supervisor or manager.

Servicing and Repairs:

• Service, repair, and maintain all Jarvie Rentals fleet, ensuring it is in excellent condition for hire.

• Conduct MOTs as required to keep equipment compliant and in good condition.

• Complete all necessary paperwork such as job sheets, service records, and maintenance logs.

• Review and update service certificates and stickers to ensure equipment compliance.

• Perform off-hire inspections, raising and recording any damages where necessary, and ensuring the equipment is safe for hire.

• Perform routine checks on essential systems such as oil, tyres, screen wash, and brakes to ensure vehicle safety.

• Conduct test drives of vehicles when required to ensure they are functioning properly.

• Ensure all vehicles and equipment being prepared for hire meet company standards for safety, functionality, and cleanliness.

Use of Tools and Equipment:

• Use hand tools, power tools, and specialised machinery safely and effectively to carry out repairs and maintenance.

• Regularly inspect lifting equipment and tools to ensure they are in safe, good working order, reporting any defects promptly.

• Properly maintain, clean, and store all tools and equipment to extend their lifespan and ensure readiness for use.

• Maintain and take full responsibility for your personal toolkit, ensuring it is kept in good condition and securely stored.

Safety & Compliance:

• Adhere to industry safety standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements.

• Always ensure the safety of the workshop and yard, keeping work areas clean, organised, and free from hazard

• Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance.

• Participate in scheduled training sessions.

• Assist with site or yard maintenance as needed to ensure a clean and organised working environment.

Collaboration/Teamwork:

• Work closely with the internal JP Rentals team and other departments to ensure smooth communication and efficient workflow.

• Communicate effectively with Team Members and customers to understand equipment issues and provide solutions.

Additional Tasks:

• Train and oversee apprentices and/or Trainees when required, providing guidance and support.

• Deliver and/or collect JP Rentals equipment, maintaining a professional and courteous relationship with customers.

• Assist with minor breakdowns, such as jumpstarting vehicles or changing tyres, to get vehicles back into service quickly.

• Ahere to all company policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with company standards and safety regulations.

Requirements for the Vehicle Mechanic Role:

• Proven experience as a Vehicle Mechanic or Technician, ideally working on a range of commercial or fleet vehicles.

• Relevant mechanical qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent).

• Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work methodically and independently.

• Good understanding of vehicle systems, safety standards, and maintenance procedures.

• Full UK driving licence (essential)

• Confident using diagnostic tools, workshop equipment, and manufacturer technical data.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality workmanship.

• Good communication skills with a professional and customer-focused attitude.

• Willingness to attend customer sites when required and work flexibly to support operational needs.

• Awareness of health and safety requirements within a workshop environment.
