The British Library has two spots in the UK, one of them located in the heart of London in St Pancras, Kings Cross and the other in up North in Yorkshire. It’s perfect for young startups with one or two people who are just looking for a space to work that isn’t their living room. And the best bit? Access to the library is free.

They’ve started offering a business partnerships programme for SMEs and entrepreneurs but if you’re only after desk access it’s free but we recommend turning up early to claim one as the good spots get taken quickly. You can also access their Reading Rooms if you apply for a free Readers pass which is valid for 3 years.

The Barbican is one of London’s cultural hot spots. While it isn’t known as a coworking space per se, it is a great alternative if you’re looking for a casual spot to hang and get some work done outside of your home. There aren’t hot desks but there are lounge areas so it’s ideal for someone just starting out not looking to fork out a lot of money for a desk space.

With plenty of cafés and an indoor conservatory to hang in, it’s pretty hip. Though be aware of spotty internet access. You might want to bring noise cancelling headphones, too.

Still renting an office space?

We hope we’ve inspired you to try some of the work spaces above. For those wondering about Google Campus London – Google decided not to reopen their London hub, otherwise it’d have a spot on this list.

One thing we’ve taken note of is how office space providers have adapted to the need for staff who work from home in their price plans.
