About the Role
We are looking for a caring and reliable Cook to join a friendly care home team in Bishop’s Stortford.
Working alongside the Head Chef, you’ll take responsibility for the kitchen on three days each week, preparing fresh, nutritious meals that meet the individual dietary needs of elderly residents. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys making a genuine difference through great food while working in a supportive and welcoming environment.
You’ll have the opportunity to prepare home-style meals, support themed dining events and ensure residents enjoy a varied and nutritious dining experience every day.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook fresh, nutritious meals for residents
- Follow planned menus while contributing ideas for seasonal dishes
- Cater for individual dietary requirements, allergies and specialist diets
- Prepare texture-modified meals safely where required (IDDSI)
- Maintain excellent food hygiene and kitchen cleanliness
- Complete food safety records, temperature logs and HACCP documentation
- Manage stock rotation, food ordering and minimise waste
- Report equipment faults and maintenance issues promptly
- Work closely with the care team to support residents’ nutritional needs
- Assist with themed menus and special occasions throughout the year
What We’re Looking For
- Food Safety Level 2 Certificate (essential)
- Previous experience as a Cook within hospitality, healthcare or a commercial kitchen
- Ability to work confidently and independently
- Good understanding of food hygiene and Health & Safety legislation
- Organised with excellent time-management skills
- Friendly, caring and compassionate approach
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Flexibility to work weekends and bank holidays when required
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience within a care home or healthcare setting
- Knowledge of IDDSI and texture-modified diets
- Food Allergen Awareness training
- Enhanced DBS Certificate (Adult Workforce)
- Understanding of nutrition for older adults
Driving Requirements
Due to the rural location of the home, applicants with a full UK driving licence and access to their own transport are preferred, as public transport is limited.
