Why are virtual team-building activities important?

With remote working now a standard for so many businesses, building camaraderie and trust can be more challenging than ever. However, team building can still thrive—even if your team rarely meets in person.

Engaging in virtual team-building activities is a fantastic way to build relationships in a remote work environment. These activities help bridge the distance, allowing colleagues to work together and have fun.

Here’s our list of 30 virtual team-building activities and games to try in 2025.

Virtual team building activities

  1. Virtual cinema screening

Bring everyone together with a good film and organise a virtual screening for your team. Make sure you provide snack boxes or gift cards so people can procure their own movie snacks.

  1. Online escape room

Escape rooms are a staple of corporate team building—and yes, they can be done remotely. Challenge your team with games from providers like Escape Live and watch how they collaborate and communicate to solve the mystery.

  1. Karaoke

Karaoke isn’t for everyone, but if you have a team that loves to belt a tune, virtual karaoke can be a lot of fun. Karaoke.co.uk provides wide libraries of songs for your team to take turns being a diva over a video meeting.

  1. Scavenger hunt

A virtual scavenger hunt can be as simple or complex as you like. Create a trail of clues on Slack or Teams, or ask participants to quickly find specific objects in their home—like something green, the biggest book, or the most unusual ornament.

  1. Who does this sound like?

A simple game that can really help with getting to know your colleagues. Ask everyone to choose a few pieces of their favourite music, then play them for the team over a video meeting. They have to guess who chose the music, either just in the chat or use an online voting tool.

  1. Guess who

A variation of the music game, but with images—either random internet photos or personal snaps like holiday pictures or Instagram posts. The team then guesses who the image is linked to.

  1. Virtual cheese tasting

Who doesn’t love free food? Organise an at-home cheese-tasting session with a provider like Paxton & Whitfield who supply artisan cheeses and host virtual tastings with expert cheesemongers.

  1. Online crafternooning

Taking a couple of hours out of the afternoon to be creative and make something has all sorts of benefits, and can be a very fun group activity. If making this happen in person isn’t practical, just send materials around to everyone in the team and get on a video meeting to try creating something together.

  1. Play co-op games

This one might be more specific to teams that like to videogame, but there are lots of great co-op games available on platforms like Steam. If you have people in your team that already play games, providing a co-op game is a great way to get them to take on a challenge and have fun together.

  1. Solve a murder mystery

Nothing brings people together like a good murder mystery. Get your team working together to solve it with a live host and immersive storytelling.

  1. Create a life map

Get to know your colleagues on a deeper level with a life map, a great activity for breaking the ice with a new team or strengthening the bonds of a familiar team. It’s all about sharing stories and experiences and getting a sense of where people have come from on their life journey.

  1. Virtual introductions with Lunch Roulette

Lunch roulette is a Slack extension that automatically connects team members so they can have a casual chat over coffee or lunch. It’s a great way to introduce people from different teams in a larger business, or for breaking the ice with new team members.

  1. Virtual TED talks

Getting together to watch and discuss a TED talk is a great activity, but it’s even better to get your team to do their own. Put aside some time each week for one person to give a short presentation on anything they like, whether that’s a new hobby they’re trying, a cause they’re passionate about, or a project they’ve done. It’s a great way for people to express their interests and learn about each other.

  1. Articulate

Articulate is a spectacular game at any time, but it also works well for virtual team fun. You don’t even need the actual game, though it can be useful. Simply provide words for each team and keep time while they try to describe them. As well as being very fun, it’s also a good lesson in communication—always valuable in the workplace.

  1. Virtual fitness classes

It’s not everyone’s favourite activity, but doing a virtual fitness class together can boost team relationships and wellbeing. Pick an online class, such as from Better.org.uk and get it in the diary as a weekly activity. Or you could even lead your own sessions, maybe doing breathing exercises or meditation, or anything to give your team a break from the usual routine of sitting at their desk.

  1. Non-book book club

A spin on the usual book club, get together to discuss a TV show, film, or game. You could set the goal of watching a specific genre or director, encouraging people to explore things they might not normally watch, play, or listen to. Even better if you can provide people with copies of the movie or streaming subscriptions.

  1. MTV Cribs

Give the team a chance to learn more about each other with a virtual house tour. Naturally, this doesn’t need to include every nook and cranny of your home, but you can show off interesting objects, art, books – anything that gives more of an insight into what makes you tick.

  1. Show and tell

If a house tour feels a bit daunting, a show and tell session is an easier way to get a window into our colleagues’ lives. Take turns to talk for a few minutes on an interesting object from your home, whether that’s something that has a lot of meaning or just something you love.

  1. Make a team mix tape (playlist)

Make a playlist that your team can each add a piece of music to, then everyone can listen and learn something about their colleagues. You could make it a weekly event where each person submits something new and why they think everyone should listen to it.

  1. Take part in a game show

Nothing brings a team together quite like competing on a game show. But you don’t need to get on the telly when you can play something like Gameshow Mania. Featuring a mashup of some of the UK’s best-loved TV quizzes and games

  1. Break the ice with new colleagues

Virtual ice breaker games are quick, fun activities that help remote teams connect and feel more comfortable. They encourage participation, spark conversation, and build team rapport—making online meetings more engaging and personal.

  1. Do something for charity

Organising a fundraising activity to support a charity is a powerful and worthwhile thing for a workplace team to do. We can’t always do a job that feels like it’s having a positive impact on the world outside, so creating a way for people to do this at work can really boost morale and engagement, as well as do real good.

  1. Scavenger hunt

Virtual scavenger hunts turn your home into a game board as you race to find quirky items—like your weirdest mug or something that makes you smile. They’re fast, fun, and a great way to get everyone laughing, moving, and bonding during virtual meetings.

  1. Explore the jungle

Virtual survival games throw your team into wild, fictional adventures—think escaping a desert island or outsmarting zombies—without ever leaving your desk. It’s all about quick thinking, teamwork, and a bit of chaos, making them a thrilling and hilarious way to bond and break up the usual virtual meeting routine.

  1. Wine tasting

Virtual wine tastings bring the vineyard to your living room, letting you sip, swirl, and savor with friends or coworkers from afar. Guided by an expert (or your most confident wine-loving teammate), you’ll explore new flavors, share laughs, and maybe even pretend you can taste those “notes of oak and blackberry.” It’s a classy, cozy, and delightfully tipsy way to connect.

  1. Learn to make cocktails

Test out your mixology skills and whip up some cocktails at home with a virtual cocktail-making class. You don’t even have to BYOB as the ingredients are provided and the class is guided by an expert mixologist. It could be a great Friday afternoon team activity to celebrate the end of the week.

  1. Bucket list

A great discussion starter is getting your team to share their bucket lists. This can be as much or as little as they want to share, with things like holiday destinations, adrenaline activities or their wildest dreams of becoming a West End star. It’s perfect for helping colleagues get to know each other

  1. GeoGuessr

Test your geography skills in a fun way with GeoGuessr. This app makes use of Google Maps to drop you in a location somewhere in the world and you have to figure out where it is. You can even set it up as a live game for the whole team to play together.

  1. Take a journey around the world

Most of us have been guilty of day-dreaming at work about travelling the world. Give your team an adventure with a virtual around the world trip. This team-building activity even links to an app for an immersive experience.

  1. Become a spy

Think your team might contain the next James Bond? Take them through this Virtual Spy School Challenge to see who’s got the edge in espionage. This fun team-building game is led by an experienced host with puzzles like cryptic codes, lip-reading, and reviewing evidence to find a killer.
