Description

We are recruiting a Regional General Manager for the Central | Te Ikaroa region to lead thePHO’s work on the ground. thePHO is a new national organisation and this role will help establish how we show up locally – consistently, practically, and with trust. This role is integral to build strong regional relationships to support better care in practice and clearer connections across the system.

At thePHO, we work directly with practices, communities, Health NZ, and alliance partners to strengthen primary care across Aotearoa. Our Regional General Managers are trusted relationship leaders and the face of thePHO in each region.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you are the senior operational leader for thePHO within your region and the primary point of connection for enrolled practices, Health New Zealand regional teams, IMPBs, and alliance partners.

You are responsible for maintaining strong practice relationships, leading regional delivery, participating in alliance structures, and bringing regional intelligence back into national planning and decision‑making.

You will:

  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with enrolled practices through regular engagement
  • Act as the primary regional contact for practices on PHO programmes, funding, and operational matters
  • Lead thePHO’s participation in regional alliance and Health NZ forums
  • Manage locally commissioned service contracts within the region
  • Oversee regional programme activity and support local delivery
  • Lead and support regional team members
  • Escalate clinical, operational, or practice‑related risks through appropriate pathways
  • Bring regional insights into central planning and performance discussions.

This role combines relationship leadership with operational accountability.

You bring senior operational or relationship leadership experience and are comfortable working across complex regional environments.

You’ll be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Experience leading senior stakeholder relationships
  • A strong understanding of primary health care or the public sector
  • Confidence operating across practices, alliances, and system partners
  • A calm, credible, and practical leadership style
  • A commitment to equity and Te Tiriti-aligned practice.

You are comfortable working independently while staying connected to a national organisation.
