We’re recruiting a Nursing Director to join thePHO as
we establish a new national organisation. This is an early leadership role,
shaping how nursing, workforce development and quality improvement are embedded
from the start – in ways that work for practices and improve access and
outcomes for communities.
Nursing leadership is central to quality primary care. At
thePHO, this role supports nurses and allied health professionals to work well,
work safely, and stay focused on patients and communities.
About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi
Reporting to the Clinical Director, you will provide senior
nursing and allied health leadership across thePHO’s enrolled practice network.
You will bring a strong nursing perspective into clinical
governance, workforce planning, and quality improvement work. You will support
practices with scope of practice, safe staffing, and professional standards,
and ensure nursing voices are embedded in decision‑making at all levels.
What you’ll be doing | Ngā mahi matua
You will:
- Lead
nursing workforce development across the enrolled practice network
- Support
nurse‑led quality improvement programmes
- Provide
nursing expertise within clinical governance and safety forums
- Monitor
nursing workforce capacity across regions and escalate risks where needed
- Work
closely with Regional General Managers and Clinical Leads to support
practices
- Represent
thePHO in nursing, allied health, and primary care forums
This role is both strategic and practical, with a strong
connection to frontline delivery.

About you | Ko wai koe
You are a registered nurse with senior leadership experience
and strong credibility across nursing and primary care.
You bring:
- Registration as a nurse with a current practising certificate
- Experience in nursing leadership, workforce development, or quality improvement
- A strong understanding of primary health care and professional standards
- Confidence contributing to governance and system-level discussions
- A practical, values-based approach to leadership.
