Got a knack for fixing things before they break? thePHO is looking for an IT Support Specialist to keep our systems running, our people supported, and our patient data safe.
This role matters because good IT isn’t glamorous – but it’s the thing that lets practices get on with what actually counts: caring for patients. When the network’s up, the laptop works, and the login doesn’t lock someone out at 8am on a Monday, that’s you doing your job well.
About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi
Reporting to the Chief Digital Officer, you’ll be the hands-on backbone of thePHO’s digital environment – keeping it secure, reliable, and easy to use.
You’ll be part of a small, capable team where nothing you fix goes unnoticed. You’ll support thePHO staff directly, and general practices across Aotearoa indirectly (and sometimes very directly, when Argus won’t connect).
You’ll work across Microsoft 365, identity and access, endpoint devices, cloud infrastructure, and helpdesk support – plus the security and compliance work that comes with being part of a regulated health organisation.
We’re remote-first, flexible by default, and allergic to unnecessary process.
What you’ll be doing | Ngā mahi matua
No two days are the same. Here’s the flavour:
- Run our Microsoft 365 tenant – Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, Intune and friends
- Manage accounts, licences, and access in Entra ID – right people, right access, right time
- Keep an eye on security – MFA, Conditional Access, endpoint protection, and the alerts that come with them
- Be the first (and often second) line of support for thePHO staff – tickets, calls, the occasional “it worked yesterday”
- Manage devices end to end – enrolment, encryption, patching, and secure disposal when their time comes
- Keep our cloud and infrastructure ticking – Azure, DNS, backups, and the systems that connect us to Health NZ
- Support general practices with IT queries – from password resets to practice management system hiccups
- Keep documentation current, so nothing lives only in your head
What you’ll need | Ngā mea me whai koe
This is the non-negotiable bit – you’ll need all of these to be considered:
-
3+ years’ hands-on experience as an IT or systems administrator
-
Real M365 admin chops – Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, Intune, and Entra ID
-
Endpoint management experience with Intune / Endpoint Manager or an equivalent MDM
-
A practical grip on cybersecurity fundamentals – MFA, Conditional Access, patch management, endpoint security
-
Experience supporting Windows and macOS, plus mobile device management (iOS/Android)
-
Strong troubleshooting instincts and a calm head when things are on fire
-
The ability to explain technical things in plain English to people who do not want the technical version
-
Comfort working autonomously in a small team, knowing when to solve it and when to escalate it
-
A genuine commitment to protecting personal health information and the privacy and security obligations that come with it
- Legal right to work in New Zealand
No exceptions on these – if you’re missing one, we’d love to see you apply for something else down the track.
Nice to have | He painga anō
None of these are required, but they’ll get you noticed:
- Microsoft certifications – MS-900, AZ-900, MD-102, SC-300, or equivalent
- Experience in a NZ general practice, PHO, or primary health organisation
- Hands-on time with Medtech Evolution, Indici, or MyPractice
- Familiarity with clinical workflows – enrolment, appointments, referrals, claims
- Experience with HealthLink, Argus, or similar secure messaging platforms
- Know-how with the Privacy Act 2020, Health Information Privacy Code, or NCSC standards
- Scripting chops – PowerShell or Microsoft Graph API
