Description

thePHO is looking for a Data Analyst / Business Analyst to help us turn complex health data into clear insights that improve care for patients and communities.

This role matters because good data leads to better decisions — and better decisions lead to better health outcomes. Your work will help clinicians, managers, and funders understand what’s happening across our enrolled population, and where we need to do better on equity.

About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi

Reporting to the Chief Digital Officer, you’ll join a small, high-impact team where your work directly supports primary care across Aotearoa.

This is a hands-on role that balances technical delivery and analytical thinking. You’ll build and maintain data pipelines, manage our data environment, and create dashboards that turn data into insight.

You’ll work closely with clinical leaders, regional teams, and the wider organisation — helping translate complex health data into practical actions.

We’re remote-first, flexible by default, and focused on what matters.

What you’ll be doing | Ngā mahi matua

You’ll work across the full data lifecycle — from raw data through to insight:

  • Build and maintain automated data pipelines to bring together data from practice systems and national collections
  • Write Python and SQL to transform, clean, and prepare data for analysis
  • Manage and optimise our PostgreSQL data repository and data structures
  • Create dashboards and reports that support clinical decision-making and operational insight
  • Deliver regular reporting to Health New Zealand and internal stakeholders
  • Monitor and improve data quality — identifying issues and working with others to resolve them
  • Translate complex data into clear, useful insights that non-technical users can act on
  • Support equity analysis, helping us understand and address differences in health outcomes.

This is a role where you’ll see the real-world impact of your work.

About you | Ko wai koe

You’re curious, practical, and comfortable working with both data and people. You enjoy solving problems and making things clearer, simpler, and more useful.

You’ll likely bring:

  • Experience in a data analyst, analytics engineer, or similar role (around 2–3+ years)
  • Strong Python and SQL skills for data transformation and analysis
  • Experience building or maintaining data pipelines and working with structured data
  • Experience with dashboards or BI tools (e.g. Superset, Power BI, Tableau, or similar)
  • Confidence explaining insights clearly to non-technical audiences
  • A strong focus on data quality, privacy, and doing things properly.

Bonus points if you’ve worked with health data, primary care systems, or population health analytics.

Most importantly, you care about using data well — and using it for good.
