Summary:
The Health Information Technician is responsible for managing patients’ medical records, ensuring their accuracy, completeness, and security. They organise and maintain medical records, enter data into databases and electronic health records, assign medical codes, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. They also provide technical support for electronic health records systems and communicate medical information to healthcare providers and insurance companies.
Responsibilities:
- Record and maintain medical records of patients, including digital and hard copies.
- Organise and manage medical records in a way that ensures confidentiality and accuracy of information.
- Enter medical data into databases and electronic health records, as well as retrieve data as needed.
- Assign appropriate medical codes based on standardised classification systems to accurately classify diagnoses, procedures, and clinical treatments.
- Ensure medical records comply with regulatory requirements, including privacy laws and insurance company guidelines.
- Review records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with legal and institutional regulations.
- Communicate medical information to healthcare providers, insurance companies, and other third parties as necessary.
- Provide technical support for electronic health records systems (EHRs) and other electronic documentation platforms.
Qualifications:
- A degree in health information technology or a related field.
- Knowledge and experience with medical records management, electronic health records, and medical coding.
- Ability to navigate and manipulate computer systems and databases.
- Attention to detail, strong organisation skills, and the ability to adhere to strict confidentiality policies.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with medical staff and other healthcare professionals.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and compliance issues in the healthcare industry.
