The Position

To support our growing volume of UXO geophysical survey projects, Milsearch is seeking highly motivated Geophysicists and Geophysical Field Assistants to populate our casual project staff pool. Positions are primarily casual however there are opportunities for progression to fulltime employment. This is a hands-on field role working alongside experienced geophysicists and EOD technicians, operating advanced survey systems used to detect buried UXO.

As a Geophysicist and a Geophysical Field Technician you will participate in various UXO survey and remediation activities alongside our current and experienced team members of the same background.

The role of a Geophysical Technician is broad and varied, but your main duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct terrestrial UXO surveys using state-of-the-art positioning and geophysical detection systems,
  • Construct, design and maintain geophysical equipment at Wollongong-based logistics hub,
  • Drone-based UXO survey,
  • Opportunities to get involved in data/GIS processing and analysis,
  • Identification of all types of military munitions, their accessories and their found state,
  • Excavation of subsurface UXO, and
  • Reporting.

Job Requirements (Geophysicist)

  • Five years of field geophysics (preferred)
  • An under or post-graduate degree in geophysics or related course
  • Plus all requirements of a Geophysical Field Technician

Job Requirements (Geophysical Field Technicians)

  • Practical and comfortable working outdoors in varied environments
  • Fit and able to walk 10 km per day carrying survey equipment
  • Interest in geophysics, electronics, surveying, remote field work, military history
  • A strong team player with a proactive attitude
  • Willing to travel for project work (including remote locations within Australia and overseas)
  • Based out of the Illawarra region (preferrable)
  • Strong organisational skills with system-based mindset

 Desirable (but not essential for Geophysical Field Technicians)

  • Practical design/construction/development-based background
  • Experienced in Field Geophysics
  • Experience with sensors
  • GPS/GIS/QGIS exposure
  • Mechanical or electrical aptitude
  • 4WD experience

Location & Travel

  • Based out of the Illawarra region (preferrable)
  • Regular travel to project sites across Australia (and occasionally internationally)
  • Field-based role with varied rosters depending on project requirement
