The Opportunity

We are looking for an Associate or above to join Partner Peter Dovolil’s practice in our Brisbane office. You will report directly to Peter and be supported by the broader General Liability team as you build strong client relationships and develop your expertise across a varied and intellectually engaging caseload.

The Team

This role sits within the General Liability team, one of Carter Newell’s largest practice groups led by five experienced Partners. The team acts for some of Australia’s largest insurers and self-insured corporations on a broad range of liability matters, including public liability, occupiers’ liability, product liability and personal injury claims. The work is fast-paced, varied and spans matters of real complexity and value.

What you’ll be doing

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing a varied caseload of general liability matters end to end, with Partner oversight
  • Drafting correspondence, pleadings, formal opinions and legal documents
  • Advising clients directly and contributing to matter strategy
  • Participating in negotiations, mediations and court proceedings
  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships
  • Supporting business development- staying across industry issues and building your network
  • Mentoring and supervising law graduates and junior solicitors in the team
  • Contributing to firm publications, internal training sessions and knowledge sharing

Essential Experience and Criteria

  • 3+ years post-admission experience in general liability, insurance litigation or personal injury
  • LLB or equivalent and a current (or eligible) Queensland Practising Certificate
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a caseload independently and meet deadlines
  • Experience drafting legal documents, pleadings and formal opinions
  • Exposure to negotiations, mediations or court proceedings
  • Experience working directly with clients and managing client relationships
