Description

Betashares is seeking a senior lawyer with strong funds experience and a commercial mindset to join the Legal, Risk & Compliance team. This is a unique opportunity to operate as a trusted adviser to the business, partner closely with senior stakeholders, support strategic product and regulatory initiatives, and play a key role in the continued growth and maturity of the function. 

Reporting directly to the General Counsel, you’ll have broad exposure across the business and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in an innovative and fast-growing organisation.  

Role responsibilities 

Key responsibilities of this role will include: 

  • Advising on the development, launch, maintenance and governance of Betashares’ funds and other investment products. 
  • Preparing, reviewing and advising on fund documentation, including product disclosure statements, target market determinations, constitutions and related disclosure materials. 
  • Advising on legal and regulatory requirements under the Corporations Act, regulatory guidance and the ASX Operating Rules. 
  • Supporting regulatory engagement with ASIC, ASX and other relevant bodies. 
  • Reviewing marketing, distribution and investor-facing materials to ensure they are accurate, balanced and legally compliant. 
  • Negotiating and advising on agreements with service providers, counterparties, index providers, market participants and other commercial partners. 
  • Providing clear, commercial and risk-aware legal advice to Product, Portfolio Management, Operations, Distribution, Marketing and senior management. 
  • Supporting strategic business initiatives, including product changes, platform initiatives, acquisitions, integrations or other growth projects. 
  • Support legal work relating to Betashares Direct and related initiatives, including product, disclosure, regulatory, contractual and customer-facing matters. 
  • Managing external legal advisers effectively, including scoping advice and ensuring practical, business-focused outcomes. 
  • Contributing to legal team knowledge management, precedents, processes and continuous improvement. 
  • Building trusted relationships with internal stakeholders and external parties. 

Key skills and experience

  • 8–10+ years’ post-admission experience in funds management, financial services or investment products, gained in private practice, in-house, or a combination of both.  
  • Strong technical knowledge of managed investment schemes, responsible entity obligations, disclosure requirements and financial services regulation.  
  • Strong knowledge of Chapters 5C and 7 of the Corporations Act.  
  • Experience preparing or reviewing product disclosure statements, target market determinations, constitutions and other fund-related documents.  
  • Exposure to ASX Operating Rules and AQUA products would be highly regarded.  
  • Current Australian practising certificate.  
  • Strong commercial judgement and ability to provide practical, solutions-focused advice.  
  • Ability to operate independently, manage competing priorities and take ownership of complex matters.  
  • Excellent drafting, analytical and attention-to-detail skills.  
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to advise and influence stakeholders at all levels.  
  • Clear and effective communication style, including the ability to explain complex legal and regulatory issues.  
  • Collaborative style with a willingness to contribute across the broader Legal, Risk and Compliance function.
