4AI Systems is building multi-sensor artificial intelligence perception and advisory systems for the rail industry. Our technology is designed to improve rail vehicle performance and safety by harnessing sensor data and advanced analytics to provide real-time operational insight ahead of the moving vehicle. Our systems are deployed across Australia and continue to expand as we grow.

As part of this growth, we are seeking an experienced Systems Safety Engineer to provide specialist software and system safety assurance across our projects. This role is critical to ensuring our systems meet functional safety requirements and support certification and regulatory approval activities in safety‑critical rail environments.

This is a permanent, full-time role based in Warabrook, Newcastle NSW, reporting to the Chief Technology Officer.

The Role

The Systems Safety Engineer provides specialist safety assurance expertise across the system lifecycle, supporting engineering teams to deliver safe, compliant and certifiable solutions. You will work closely with software, hardware and project teams to assess safety impacts, contribute to hazard analyses, and develop robust safety documentation.

The daily activities of this role include:

  • Providing software and system safety assurance support across 4AI Systems projects
  • Evaluating Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs), Change Notices, Deficiency Reports, Mishaps, and Requests for Deviations or Waivers from a safety perspective
  • Conducting Functional Hazard Analyses (FHA) for new or changed software functionality, including assessment of systematic and common mode failures
  • Providing subject matter expert input into Sub-System Hazard Analysis (SSHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), and Operating & Support Hazard Analysis (O&SHA) activities
  • Assessing safety impacts of software and system changes across operational and support contexts
  • Conducting Functional Safety Assessments (FSA) and producing Safety Assurance Statements and Safety Assurance Reports
  • Developing, reviewing, and maintaining safety documentation including safety plans, safety cases and safety reports
  • Ensuring alignment between software certification baselines, supporting analyses, and the overall Safety Case Reviewing safety verification and validation activities, including safety testing, simulation and evidence generation
  • Participating in internal and external safety audits and assessments
  • Collaborating with engineering teams to ensure appropriate allocation and implementation of safety requirements
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of organisational safety assurance practices

The successful candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications relevant to the role (engineering, mathematics, or a closely related discipline highly regarded)
  • Demonstrated experience applying Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA) and other safety analysis techniques
  • Strong understanding of functional safety lifecycles, safety integrity levels and assurance processes
  • Experience working with recognised functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, EN 50126, EN 50129, EN 50716, or equivalent
  • Foundational experience with safety analysis and risk mitigation techniques such as STPA, FMEA, and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and attention to detail skills
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex safety concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Willingness to travel from time to time as required

Highly Regarded:

  • Prior experience in rail, transport, defence, or other safety-critical industries
  • Exposure to software safety assurance and understanding of differing assurance levels based on software criticality
  • Knowledge of Microsoft-based environments and system security controls
  • Current driver’s licence

We will negotiate the salary for the successful candidates according to experience.

This role is only open to those who are permanent residents of Australia or citizens, preferably from the greater Newcastle area, or those willing to relocate at their own expense to Newcastle, NSW.
