Te tūranga | The role
Experience Wellington is seeking an experienced and visionary Senior Curator Art to help shape and deliver an ambitious programme of contemporary art exhibitions, publications and public programmes at City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi.
As part of the senior curatorial team, you will lead the development of innovative exhibitions from concept to delivery, build strong relationships with artists and sector partners, contribute to fundraising and audience engagement initiatives, and support the growth of a collaborative curatorial practice. The role also includes line management of the Curator Art position.
We’re looking for someone with significant curatorial experience in public institutions, deep knowledge of contemporary art in Aotearoa and internationally, exceptional research and communication skills, and a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

As a member of the cross disciplinary senior curatorial team at Experience Wellington, this role takes the creative lead in the delivery of innovative, well researched exhibitions, publications, and events that have high impact for Wellingtonians and visitors to the city. The role will primarily be focussed on City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi, and where relevant, other Wheako Pōneke Experience Wellington sites. The role will also line manage the Curator Art and contribute to the development of the overall programme for City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi.
Ngā tino pūkenga me ngā wheako | The essential skills and experience for the role
- 8+ years curatorial experience developing successful exhibitions from vision to execution in a public art gallery
- Demonstrated experience building strong relationships with the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders internally and externally
- Clear understanding of Te Tiriti partnership obligations in a museum/gallery context and a commitment to furthering cultural competency
- Relevant PhD and a publication record that includes peer reviewed periodicals and/or book chapters, and more general audience content for exhibition and digital channels
