We’re looking for an experienced, compassionate Nurse Prescriber to join our small, highly supportive team delivering five days a week nurse-led clinics for people who have fallen through the gaps of the health system.
This is not a typical primary care Nurse Prescriber role.
This is a role for someone who thrives on meaningful work, values equity, and understands that the greatest clinical impact is often made with those who have the least access to care.
Across the Hutt Valley, more than 12,000 people are not enrolled with a general practice. Many face significant barriers to healthcare, including trauma, homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use, and long periods without consistent medical care. For some, a visit to Karanga Manaaki may be their first positive experience with a health professional in years.
About the role
Working within your Nurse Prescriber scope of practice, you’ll assess, diagnose, prescribe, treat and coordinate care for people whose health needs are often complex and whose medical histories are frequently incomplete or unavailable.
You’ll make sound clinical decisions using comprehensive assessment, clinical reasoning and your professional judgement – often without previous notes, medication histories or collateral information. At the same time, you’ll build trusting therapeutic relationships that encourage people to return and continue engaging with healthcare.
Your work will include:
- Providing autonomous clinical assessment, diagnosis and prescribing within your scope of practice.
- Managing acute presentations alongside long-term conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, respiratory disease and skin conditions.
- Assessing and responding to mental health presentations and the impacts of substance use with confidence, compassion and
without judgement.
- Delivering wound care, physical assessment and other clinical procedures.
- Recognising when specialist or GP input is required and working collaboratively to ensure safe, high-quality care.
- Supporting people to reconnect with ongoing primary healthcare and other community services.
- We’re looking for someone who can remain calm in uncertainty, make thoughtful clinical decisions with limited information, and
balance clinical safety with genuine human connection.
You’ll bring:
- Experience working with people experiencing health inequities and complex health needs.
- Excellent clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.
- Confidence managing chronic disease, acute presentations and common mental health conditions within your scope.
- Strong medication knowledge and sound prescribing judgement, including knowing when not to prescribe.
- A trauma-informed approach that recognises behaviour through the lens of lived experience.
- The ability to build trust with people who may have experienced judgement or exclusion from healthcare.
- A collaborative approach and willingness to work closely within a small multidisciplinary team.
