About Us
At The Instillery, we’re a team passionate about solving big problems and partnering with technology leaders. We bring together fresh talent and seasoned experts in a fast-moving, agile place to learn, hone your skills, and thrive. We seek out the people who instinctively ask “why?” and who genuinely care about providing exceptional service to our people and our clients.
The Role
We are looking for a Senior Security Specialist to join our Managed Security Services team in Auckland. Reporting directly to the Security Operations Centre (SOC) Manager, this role operates with a high degree of autonomy. You will be the final technical escalation point for complex incidents, a trusted advisor for our clients, and the driving force behind the design and optimisation of our security platforms.
This is a true hybrid role blending high-impact Incident Response & Digital Forensics, Security Platform Engineering, and Strategic Client Advisory. You will also play a pivotal role in mentoring our junior analysts, shaping our detection playbooks, and elevating our collective capabilities.
Note: Because cyber threats don’t sleep, this role involves critical duties that continue during crisis situations, which will necessitate extended hours and structured on-call arrangements when required.
Key Responsibilities
-
Advanced Incident Response & Forensics: Act as the ultimate technical escalation point for the SOC; leading end-to-end investigation, forensic analysis, containment, and eradication for high-impact or complex security crises (malware, ransomware, cloud compromise, etc.).
-
Security Engineering & Automation: Lead the technical design, implementation, and optimization of multi-tenant security platforms (SIEM, SOAR, EDR, ITDR). Build secure API integrations, webhooks, and automated workflows.
-
Trusted Advisory & Delivery: Translate complex technical risks into clear, business-friendly language. Deliver executive-ready incident reports and lead customer service reviews to build long-term mitigation strategies and security roadmaps.
-
Mentorship & Culture: Upskill junior SOC analysts and internal teams, fostering a high-performance culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
What You’ll Bring
You have an inquisitive, analytical mindset, high attention to detail, and a calm, structured approach when the pressure is on.
Your Technical Kit:
-
SOC & IR Expertise: 3+ years of experience in Security Operations / Incident Response, with a proven track record of handling complex investigations and advanced forensics.
-
Platform Engineering: 3+ years designing, implementing, and supporting security platforms (SIEM, SOAR, EDR, VM, ITDR, Microsoft 365, and Entra ID).
-
Infrastructure Background: 3+ years in systems or network support roles.
-
Cloud & Tools: 2+ years of experience with cloud/on-prem environments (Linux & Windows), CLI, KQL, regex, forensic tools, and backup platforms.
-
Scripting & Frameworks: Familiarity with PowerShell, Python, common threat intelligence platforms, and industry security frameworks.
-
Availability: Ability to work full-time from the office if required, and participate in a defined, agreed-upon on-call roster.
- Relevant industry certifications are highly regarded.
