Description

Independent Expert Board member (Contractor)

Te Tira Ahu Pae Students’ Association Board

Te Tira Ahu Pae is seeking an experienced, values-driven Independent Expert Board member to join our students’ association Board as a contracted expert with voting rights. This role supports tauira (students) in governance spaces by providing stability, cultural grounding, and guidance in areas such as governance, strategy, risk, and compliance — while protecting student voice and rangatiratanga.

Job description:

  • Do you have governance or senior advisory experience?
  • Do you understand and are you confident in working alongside student leaders?
  • Are you deeply aligned with Māori values and kaupapa Māori practice?
  • Do you have a working knowledge of the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 and the Charities Act 2005?
  • Can you lead with manaakitanga, clarity, and integrity?

About the organisation:

Te Tira Ahu Pae is the Massey University students’ association, providing independent services and representation to Massey University students across the motu and beyond. A key aspect of this organisation is our student-led approach to governance, in which decisions are made by students for students and is independent of the University.

Te Tira Ahu Pae seeks to create equitable experiences and outcomes for tauira at the university, providing advocacy, clubs, events, representation, and more. Governed by the Board, the Association is also composed of a team of staff providing service delivery and management, and Student Representatives who bring tauira voice to Massey University.

About the Board:

Te Tira Ahu Pae is committed to removing barriers to education for students and enhancing equity within student experience. The Board is responsible for executive decision making for the organisation — establishing and upholding the purpose, values and strategic direction of Te Tira Ahu Pae, developing governing policies to support clear operational processes, employing and monitoring the General manager, and identifying and managing risk to the association. The Board consists of five student seats, and two Independent Experts.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to student leadership development while strengthening culturally grounded governance.

Role requirements:

To apply for this role, you should —

  • Be qualified to be an officer under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022
  • Be independent from Massey University (you must not be a staff member of Massey University, or a currently enrolled student at Massey University)
  • Be independent from Te Tira Ahu Pae (you must not be a staff member of Te Tira Ahu Pae Incorporated)
  • Have a good understanding of financial management, good governance, and the requirements of the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 and Charities Act 2005
  • A relevant tertiary qualification
  • Have good communication skills and experience dealing with different perspectives
  • Be committed to reading and contributing to Board agendas, minutes, and supplementary material
  • Be committed to attending Board meetings on a fortnightly basis
  • Be committed to acting in good faith and in the interests of the Association and tauira at Massey
