About the job

We are seeking an emerging Quantity Surveyor to join our high-performing team on a fixed-term parental leave cover.

This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented professional with 3 years of experience who wants to play a pivotal role in managing the financial success of diverse construction projects. You’ll oversee costs from early-stage estimation through to final account, working closely with the director, project managers, contractors, and clients to deliver on budget, on time, and to the highest standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare accurate cost estimates by analysing drawings, specifications, and other documentation, including materials, labour, and overheads.
  • Measure and quantify materials and labour for construction activities.
  • Assist with subcontractor valuations and the preparation of interim payment certificates.
  • Manage the tender process, evaluate bids, and negotiate with contractors and suppliers.
  • Assist in the procurement process by obtaining quotes, preparing tender documents, and evaluating bids from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Draft, review, and administer contracts to ensure compliance with legal and industry standards.
  • Prepare and issue contract awards and purchase orders for subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Create, distribute, and track purchase orders for subtrades and material supplies.
  • Monitor project expenditures, prepare cash flow forecasts, and ensure projects stay within budget.
  • Support Project and Operations Managers in managing project budgets by tracking expenses, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and negotiating with suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Conduct progress valuations and certify contractor payments.
  • Undertake tracking variations, preparation of variation costs, issuing variation costs for review and submission of variations to clients.
  • Identify and assess potential risks and opportunities, evaluate their impact on project costs, and implement effective mitigation strategies with clear recommendations.
  • Monitor risk throughout the project lifecycle, updating cost forecasts and advising stakeholders on potential financial impacts.
  • Assess, prepare, and negotiate variations, claims, and disputes to ensure fair outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and cost records to support variations and claims.
  • Prepare and compile monthly payment claims for client submission.
  • Issue invoices promptly once the client approves the payment certificate.
  • Prepare accurate financial and progress reports for stakeholders.
  • Maintain well-organised project documentation, including contracts, invoices, drawings, and correspondence.
  • Assist with monthly payment claims for projects under construction, submitting them for the Director’s review.
  • Attend regular PCG meetings and provide required reporting updates.
  • Work closely with project managers, architects, engineers, and clients to ensure smooth project delivery, aligning cost-related decisions with overall project objectives and requirements.
  • Manage project close-out, including preparing final accounts and reconciliations.

Skills & Experience

  • Degree-qualified in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years proven Quantity Surveying experience in NZ residential (preferred high-volume build), and/or commercial, construction projects, ideally mid-level with a background in both pre-contract and post-contract quantity surveying.
  • Proficient in cost estimation, measurement, and valuation techniques.
  • Knowledge of New Zealand Standard Construction Contracts (NZS 3910, NZS 3916, etc.), procurement processes, and relevant industry standards.
  • Experience managing subcontractors, suppliers, and consultants.
  • Full Class 1 New Zealand driver’s licence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite, Ground plan and relevant quantity surveying software applications.
  • Familiarity with cross-department collaboration.
  • Strategic thinker and mentoring capability.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in cost calculations, financial management and documentation.
  • Effective time management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Clear, confident communication and a solutions-first mindset.
  • Ability to work autonomously while contributing to a high-performing team
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and building regulations.
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills.

  • Membership or working towards membership with NZIQS (or RICS internationally) is often preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage difficult conversations with professionalism and tact, while facilitating constructive dialogue and achieving positive solutions.
