About the role
We are seeking a highly capable Forest Harvesting and Roading Manager with a Bachelor of Forest Engineering (B.For.Eng) to lead the planning, construction, and delivery of harvesting and forest roading operations across the Gisborne region.
This is a senior operational role with a strong engineering and roading emphasis, responsible for ensuring that all forest access, roading, and earthworks are designed and executed to a high technical standard, while supporting safe, efficient, and compliant harvesting operations.
Forest roading & engineering/Harvest Planning (primary focus)
- Lead the engineering design, planning, and supervision of forest roading, including new road construction, upgrades, and maintenance.
- Design and oversee landings, skid sites, and associated earthworks.
- Apply forest engineering principles to optimise alignment, gradients, drainage, and long-term road performance.
- Manage geotechnical, erosion, and slope stability risks.
- Integrate roading design with harvest planning and contractor capability.
Harvesting operations
- Manage harvesting operations alongside roading delivery.
- Oversee harvest planning, contractor engagement, and operational execution.
- Monitor productivity, costs, and performance across sites.
Health, safety & environmental compliance
- Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, NES-CF, and consent conditions.
- Lead contractor pre-starts, audits, and site inspections.
- Ensure erosion and sediment controls are correctly designed and implemented.
Commercial & reporting responsibilities
- Prepare and manage roading and harvesting budgets.
- Review and approve contractor invoices.
- Provide clear operational reporting to management and forest owners.
Qualifications & experience
Mandatory: Bachelor of Forest Engineering (B.For.Eng).
Demonstrated experience in forest roading and earthworks delivery.
Desirable:
Experience in steep terrain roading.
Familiarity with NES-CF, GIS, and harvest planning tools.
