Pathlab is seeking a highly experienced and technically accomplished Haematology
professional looking for a substantive leadership role within a progressive,
modern diagnostic network.
This is a pivotal appointment within our organisation. The Lead of Haematology holds
operational, technical, and direct people leadership responsibility for the
Waikato Haematology service, plays a visible role in shaping service delivery,
quality standards, and future capability development across the wider Pathlab
network.
The Role
Reporting to the Haematology Discipline Lead, you will:
- Combine advanced scientific expertise with operational and leadership accountability.
- Provide authoritative technical oversight across routine and specialist Haematology investigations.
- Lead, coach and develop a team of Scientists and Technicians, embedding a high-performance, quality-focused culture.
- Oversee laboratory operations, workforce planning, workflow optimisation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Partner closely with Haematology Pathologists, contributing to clinical service development and diagnostic excellence.
- Collaborate with discipline leaders across Biochemistry, Histology, Immunology, and Pre-analytical Services to strengthen cross-functional integration.
- Lead accreditation, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance aligned with IANZ and ISO 15189 standards.
- Contribute to service innovation, automation optimisation, and longer-term strategic planning across sites.
About You
We are looking for a technically credible, confident leader who is experienced operating at senior departmental level, can contribute beyond day-to-day operations and is wanting to develop further to grow their career with Pathlab.
You will bring:
- A recognised tertiary qualification in Medical Laboratory Science (or equivalent).
- Significant experience in Haematology, including exposure to complex and specialist testing
- Demonstrated leadership experience within a diagnostic laboratory environment.
- A calm, practical style and clear communication with both scientific and clinical colleagues.
- Strong technical depth with the ability to mentor, challenge, and elevate team capability.
- Prove understanding of laboratory accreditation systems, quality governance, and ISO 15189 standards.
- Experience with laboratory automation, middleware, and process optimisation (LEAN experience advantageous).
- The ability to engage confidently with clinical stakeholders and senior leadership.
- Eligibility for registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practising Certificate (or ability to obtain).
