Description

Someone once told us the most rewarding thing you can do at work is help someone else figure out they are actually really good at something. We took that to heart.

Here at McIntyre Dick, we believe in having the right people in the right seats. We focus on growing and developing our team, recruiting for how people think, not just what they know and that little bit extra. A lot of what we do looks like what other accounting firms do, but our real point of difference is how we do it and who we have doing it.

The role

This is a Team Manager role with two connected parts.

The first, and where this role really comes alive, is being the person our trainees and early-career accountants report to and grow with. You’ll be the person who helps our accountants-in-training figure out how good they can actually be. That means structured development: training plans, study support, progress check-ins, as well as the everyday coaching and mentoring that makes the biggest difference over time.

The second is leading a team delivering core support services for our clients, including bookkeeping, GST preparation and filing, and software support.

You’ll also be part of our operational leadership group, working alongside other managers and leaders to help the business move forward.

What you’ll be doing

  • Directly managing and developing trainees and early-career accountants across the firm – building their confidence, capability and career trajectory.
  • Contributing to structured development – study support, milestone check-ins, L&D planning working alongside our People and Capability Manager .
  • On-the-job, day-to-day coaching and mentoring that makes a real difference: feedback, guidance, encouragement and the occasional nudge.
  • Leading a team delivering quality bookkeeping, GST and software support services to clients.
  • Managing workflow across the team – making sure the right work is with the right people at the right time, and that nothing falls through the gaps.
  • Maintaining quality and accuracy across team output through review and QA checks.
  • Showing up consistently for your people – approachable, straight up and leading by example.

What we’re looking for

We’d love to hear from people who have:

  • A solid grounding in accounting – you understand the work your team is doing and can help them do it better.
  • Experience in bookkeeping and GST services.
  • Leadership experience, whether that’s a formal management role or something more informal – mentoring, training, being the go-to person on your team.
  • A genuine passion for developing others, especially people who are new to the profession or finding their feet.
  • The ability to think critically and question the process, not just follow it.
  • Two or more years’ experience in public practice (preferred).
  • A relevant tertiary qualification, or the equivalent in real-world experience.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust with people at all stages of their career.
  • Confidence with Xero and the Microsoft Office suite – and the ability to pick up new tools quickly.

If you don’t tick every box but think you’ve got what it takes, please apply anyway – we’d love to hear from you.
