Role Purpose

The ReStore Assistant supports the day‑to‑day operation of the ReStore, delivering excellent customer service to shoppers and donors while supporting retail, stock, and donation activities. This is a flexible, hands‑on role that contributes directly to the success of the store and the wider Habitat for Humanity mission.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service & Retail Operations

  • Provide friendly, professional service to customers and donors
  • Operate the computerised cash register and EFTPOS system (Lightspeed)
  • Answer customer enquiries in person and over the phone
  • Assist with pricing, displaying, and merchandising stock
  • Book deliveries and collections for purchased or donated goods
  • Represent Habitat for Humanity positively and explain how ReStore sales support the mission

Donations, Deliveries & Stock Handling

  • Receive, sort, and safely handle donated goods
  • Assist with coordinating pickups and deliveries
  • Load and unload goods safely and efficiently
  • Deliver purchased goods where approved by the ReStore Manager
  • Monitor stock levels and maintain orderly stock areas
  • Undertake heavy lifting where required (e.g. furniture)

Health, Safety & Vehicle Responsibilities

  • Drive safely and courteously when completing deliveries or pickups
  • Ensure loads are secure and within weight limits
  • Report vehicle compliance or mechanical issues promptly
  • Follow all health and safety policies and procedures

Administration

  • Follow cash‑handling procedures and maintain accurate records
  • Assist with cash-up and register reconciliation when required
  • Answer phones and support basic administrative tasks

Volunteer Support

  • Assist with supervising and supporting volunteers during shifts
  • Help with training and ensuring volunteers follow store procedures
  • Support duty rosters to help ensure adequate cover during opening hours

General Duties

  • Maintain a clean, tidy, and welcoming store environment
  • Wear uniform and name badge as required
  • Maintain confidentiality of customer, volunteer, and organisational information
  • Contribute positively as part of a supportive team
  • Undertake other duties as reasonably required

Skills, Experience & Attributes

Essential

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Strong time management and organisational ability
  • Positive, compassionate, and flexible attitude
  • Full, clean New Zealand driver’s licence
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Ability to undertake physical tasks, including lifting

Desirable

  • Experience in retail, customer service, or community organisations
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Familiarity with point‑of‑sale systems
