About The Role
The Senior Backend Engineer will play a key role in designing, building and evolving Generate’s backend and integration platforms.
This is a hands-on engineering role focused on developing secure, scalable backend services, APIs and cloud-native applications. Working across modern AWS technologies, you’ll help build the integration layer that connects our applications, data platforms and business systems, enabling secure, reliable access to information across the organisation.
You’ll work closely with Technology, Product and Data teams to design pragmatic technical solutions, improve engineering practices, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of our cloud platform. This is an opportunity to influence architecture, modernise our technology stack, and help shape how software is built and delivered across Generate.
Your day-to-day will look something like this:
Backend Engineering & APIs
- Design, build and maintain secure, scalable backend services and APIs
- Develop API-first solutions that are reliable, performant and easy to maintain
- Build cloud-native applications using AWS services
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues across backend systems
Platform & Cloud Engineering
- Design and implement scalable cloud solutions on AWS
- Improve platform reliability, observability, resilience and security
- Contribute to infrastructure-as-code using Terraform and/or Pulumi
- Monitor and optimise platform performance and cloud costs
Systems Integration
- Build integrations between internal and external platforms
- Develop AWS-native integration services
- Help establish a consistent, secure integration layer across the business
- Enable reliable access to data through APIs and services
Engineering Excellence
- Improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation
- Contribute to architecture and technical design decisions
- Participate in code reviews and promote engineering best practices
- Mentor other engineers and help raise technical capability across the team
AI-Assisted Engineering
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity and software quality
- Identify practical opportunities to accelerate development, testing and documentation using AI
- Champion responsible use of AI within engineering workflows
About You
We’re looking for a senior engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and building scalable systems that make a real impact.
The technical skills we see as critical to succeed in this position:
- 5+ years’ experience in backend software engineering, platform engineering or related disciplines, delivering secure, scalable production systems
- Strong experience designing and developing backend services and APIs, with experience in Node.js and TypeScript
- Strong experience building cloud-native applications and integration services on AWS
- Experience designing and implementing systems integrations and API-first solutions across multiple platforms
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and/or Pulumi, and working with GitHub for source control
- Experience contributing to technical design, solution architecture and cloud platform evolution
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and supporting production systems
- Experience integrating enterprise data platforms, including exposure to Snowflake through secure APIs
- Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity, quality and delivery outcomes
