As our Baker / Pastry, you’ll work closely with our Head of Pastry to prepare and present exceptional pastry across all aspects of the lodge. You’ll be part of a collaborative team committed to excellence, creativity, and storytelling through food.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About the Role
As Bake / Pastry Chef, you’ll work predominately morning shifts – supporting the Head of Pastry to ensure we have delicious pastry options for all our guests at Sugarloaf and the Homestead. You will also support the wide Kitchen team with prep for lunch and evenings.
Ngā kawenga matua | Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, bake, and finish pastry, bread, and dessert items to the standard set by the Head of Pastry
- Maintain quality, consistency, and presentation across your section — plated desserts, petit fours, and bread
- Manage daily mise en place, including doughs, creams, ganaches, and fillings, with attention to timing, batch consistency, and shelf life
- Support stock rotation, ordering, and inventory management for pastry ingredients
- Provide support to junior team members
- Ensure compliance with food safety, allergen management, and health & safety standards
- Communicate clearly with the Head of Pastry and wider kitchen team on production planning and service requirements
- Contribute ideas for seasonal menu development, showcasing local and seasonal produce
- Keep your workstation clean, organised, and efficient, with proper care of pastry equipment

- Proven experience as a Pastry Chef or Chef de Partie with strong baking experience
- Solid technical cooking skills and attention to detail
- Team-first attitude and willingness to learn from senior chefs
- Excellent communication, organisation, and time-management skills
- Knowledge of food safety and kitchen procedures
- Flexibility to work a range of shifts, including weekends and public holidays
- Professional presentation and a calm, positive approach under pressure
