Description

About Fat Zebra

At Fat Zebra, we simplify payments so merchants and platforms can scale with confidence. Our flexible, secure, and scalable payments platform supports over 100,000 merchants of all sizes across Australia. We help our customers navigate the complexities of the payments platform, enabling them to focus on what matters most: growing their business.

The Consumer Data Right (CDR), often referred to as Open Banking or Open Energy, is a government-regulated data sharing framework that gives consumers secure access to their banking and energy data and the ability to share it with accredited third parties. This spans a variety of use cases across banking, energy, government, fintech and payments. Fat Zebra’s CDR solutions can be used for any use case, in any industry, and can be deployed in a matter of hours.

Our B2B CDR platform is used by companies that want to participate and access Open Banking or Open Energy services quickly and easily. We take care of the heavy lifting for security, compliance, and reliability so our customers can focus on creating value. We work with a wide range of companies, from startups to large enterprises, across financial services, energy, fintech, government, and other sectors building data-driven, customer-focused products.

About the Role

Fat Zebra is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Consumer Data Right (CDR) platform team. You will be a key technical contributor, taking ownership of complex backend and platform features and helping to raise the quality bar across the team.

The role operates in a highly regulated environment, building a production-grade platform at scale. You are someone who takes pride in craft, writes code others want to maintain, and can navigate ambiguity to deliver reliable outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Software Engineer in the CDR platform team, you will:

  • Design and build secure, scalable APIs and backend services using Kotlin and/or Java (Spring Boot).
  • Take ownership of complex features end-to-end, from design through to production delivery.
  • Contribute to technical decisions within your team, considering both short-term delivery and long-term maintainability.
  • Develop and maintain automated deployment pipelines and infrastructure on AWS using Infrastructure as Code.
  • Implement strong authentication and authorisation patterns including PKI, OAuth2/OIDC, and token-based systems.
  • Build and maintain first-class observability: structured logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, and alerting.
  • Participate in incident response, contribute to root cause analyses, and drive remediation of recurring issues.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, data, and product teams to deliver outcomes aligned with business goals.
  • Actively contribute to code reviews, share knowledge, and help grow the capability of the broader team.
  • Communicate clearly with teammates and stakeholders on technical trade-offs and delivery status.

How You Know You Will Succeed

  • You deliver high-quality solutions to complex technical problems with minimal supervision.
  • You contribute meaningfully to architectural discussions and your input is sought by peers.
  • You leave code, documentation, and systems in better shape than you found them.
  • Your work is reliable in production and you take ownership when things go wrong.

About You

The ideal candidate has strong experience in the following:

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with demonstrated impact at a senior level.
  • Strong proficiency in Kotlin and/or Java, with hands-on experience building modern backend services using Spring Boot.
  • Solid experience with AWS, including ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS/DynamoDB, VPC, and networking fundamentals.
  • Practical experience with infrastructure automation tools such as Terraform, CDK, or CloudFormation.
  • Good understanding of PKI, certificate management, mTLS, JWT, OAuth2/OIDC, and modern authN/authZ patterns.
  • Experience building observable, reliable systems using logs, metrics, tracing, SLOs, and alerting.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, data consistency, caching, and performance engineering.
