About Fat Zebra
At Fat Zebra, we simplify payments so merchants and platforms can scale with confidence. Our flexible,
secure, and scalable payments platform supports over 100,000 merchants of all sizes across Australia. We help our customers navigate the complexities of the payments platform, enabling them to focus on what matters most: growing their business.
About the Role
This is a senior, hands-on design role for someone who takes real ownership of complex, high-impact work and builds things, not just specs them. As a Senior Product Designer, you’ll lead research, design and prototyping on payment features, with AI tools as a core part of how you work rather than an afterthought. You’ll turn technical payment capabilities into intuitive experiences merchants actually want to use, and move from concept to testable solution on your own. You’ll work closely with designers, PMs and engineers, joining technical conversations early and shaping decisions rather than designing around them. Your edge is craft, systems thinking and the ability to validate ideas quickly.
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Product Designer, your responsibilities will include:
-
Lead end-to-end design for complex payment features, turning technical capabilities into intuitive experiences that merchants actually want to use.
-
Use AI-powered design and prototyping as a core partof your workflow. Tools like Claude Code and Figma Make to build functional prototypes, generate UI variations, and move from concept to testable solution independently.
-
Contribute to cross-functional product decisions. Work closely with product and engineers, join technical conversations early, and help shape what we build rather than designing around it.
-
Run user research and validation. Understand how merchants interact with payment systems, then translate those insights into design solutions that solve real problems.
-
Maintain and raise our design systems and standards. Contribute to our component libraries and set the bar for what good looks like across interfaces, interactions, and the decisions made without you in the room.
About You
To hit the ground running you will need:
-
Strong foundations in interaction design and UX principles, the kind that help you solve complex user problems and create genuinely intuitive product experiences.
-
Fluency with AI-assisted design and prototyping tools like Claude Code and Figma Make, using them to build, iterate and validate ideas, not just produce mock-ups.
-
Solid high-fidelity UI design skills, with the judgement to know when a working prototype communicates more than a polished mock.
-
Strong cross-functional collaboration, working effectively with product, engineering and business stakeholders.
-
Systematic thinking about design systems to keep consistency and scale across product experiences.
-
The ability to run user research and usability testing to validate design decisions and keep outcomes user-centred.
Experience that will support you could include:
-
Fintech or financial services experience, with an understanding of the regulatory constraints and user expectations in financial products.
-
A data-driven approach to design and analytics, validating design impact and informing product decisions.
-
Enough comfort in a codebase to build working prototypes, judge what is feasible, and close the gap between design and implementation.
-
Accessibility and inclusive design experience, so our products work for diverse user groups.
-
A habit of knowledge sharing and supporting team growth.
-
Workshop facilitation for leading design sprints and stakeholder alignment sessions.
-
Motion design and micro-interaction skills that improve the experience through considered animation and transitions.
