About Canteen Aotearoa

Canteen Aotearoa, a highly regarded national organisation, provides evidence-based support to rangatahi/young people 12-25 years dealing with the enormous challenges that cancer brings, whether dealing with their own diagnosis or that of whānau.

Canteen provides an innovative combination of individual support, peer support programs, and group based psychosocial programs, both face to face and online, for rangatahi affected by cancer across Aotearoa.

Job Summary:

We are looking for an experienced, highly skilled, professional and passionate Youth Worker to work in our Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington Office on a permanent, full-time basis. As a Youth Worker you will be responsible for designing, delivering and evaluating a portfolio of peer support, psychosocial and recreational initiatives for Canteen’s service users. These include planning and facilitating regular in-office events, regional events, online events, and camps as well as one to one support and reviews with a caseload.

You will play a key role in Canteen’s psychosocial practices and act as a key support worker for rangatahi, safeguarding the wellbeing of rangatahi through their Canteen experience. You will help facilitate the Canteen Leadership program, including monthly workshops with youth development content.  You will be working closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver these high-quality psychosocial services.

This role is 40 hours per week Mon-Fri + occasional weekend work.

Is This You?

We are looking for a highly motivated team player who can also work with an appropriate level of independence and autonomy as required to ensure that the organisation achieves its mission and is highly regarded as referral destination for rangatahi. You will be adaptable to change as Canteen continues to evolve its offering to rangatahi and whānau in response to changing needs and opportunities.

As Youth Worker you will be a confident communicator, able to engage rangatahi, volunteers and the general public about our work.  You will develop and maintain relationships with a broad cross section of Canteen referral sources including hospitals, schools and other not-for-profit organisations.

You will have a relevant tertiary qualification (youth work, education, psychology, human services or related fields) and the ideal candidate will have a background in supporting rangatahi experiencing significant life challenges. You will also have proven experience planning and facilitating events/groups and be passionate about events-based youth development.

A current full driver’s license, ability to obtain a first aid certificate and flexibility to travel and work weekends and evenings (with notice) are essential.

For this role we are looking for someone who has strengths in event management.

Please include relevant experience in your cover letter.

What We Will Offer You:

A competitive salary for the not-for-profit sector.

Joining a supportive team that wants to achieve great outcomes for rangatahi.

*Due to the nature of Canteen’s work, you will be required to occasionally work weekends and evenings. Advance notice will be given when this is the case, and Canteen does have a Time off in Lieu policy for taking leave as agreed with the supervising manager.

**Canteen Aotearoa does work that involves employees being in direct contact with children and young people; they must complete police vetting and working with children checks before being officially hired at Canteen Aotearoa. This paperwork will be provided by Canteen Aotearoa as part of the hiring process once an offer has been made.
