Design and build roads that connect local communities – develop your career and knowledge.
About the Role
As a Roading Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering safe, practical
roading and transport infrastructure solutions for local government and private sector clients.
You’ll take projects from early scoping and optioneering through to detailed design, construction drawings, and documentation – covering roadway geometry, pavements, drainage/culverts, and associated features such as signage and pavement markings.
Your design approach will be pragmatic and risk‑focused, recognising site‑specific
constraints and ensuring outputs are fit‑for‑purpose and aligned with applicable standards and client requirements.
You’ll collaborate closely with experienced BTW designers and external stakeholders, and you’ll ground‑truth designs through site visits and provide responsive support through procurement
and construction to achieve high‑quality outcomes.
Key responsibilities
- Lead roading design projects from early scoping and investigations through to detailed design and construction documentation.
- Oversee and guide design outputs working with BTW designers
- Prepare and review technical reports, specifications, and estimates, ensuring designs are
practical, buildable, and fit‑for‑purpose.
- Ground‑truth designs through site visits, stakeholder engagement, and close coordination with contractors and project teams.
- Provide senior technical support through procurement and construction, including design clarifications and issue resolution to keep delivery on track.
About you
- Diploma in Civil Engineering or higher education
- 10+ years’ road asset management experience
- Strong technical engineering knowledge, including at least 5 years’ experience applying regulatory frameworks within New Zealand. Australian experience will also be considered where closely aligned with the New Zealand regulatory framework
- Excellent communication, autonomy, analytical and strategic problem-solving skills.
- Full NZ Drivers Licence – Class 1
This is a senior role. Applications that do not meet the listed experience requirements will not be progressed.
