Description

Want to lead engineers, not just manage tickets? Arlo’s platform is used by customers in over 70 countries, has processed $3B in course transactions, and has helped train more than 7.5 million people. We’re a Wellington-headquartered SaaS company moving into our next phase of growth — global expansion, deeper AI capabilities, and a product used by a genuinely engaged community of training professionals worldwide.

You’ll lead a team of 5-10 engineers, owning delivery end-to-end while staying close enough to the codebase to guide architecture and unblock the hard problems. This isn’t a role where you disappear into spreadsheets and status updates; you’re expected to have an opinion on the technical direction, and the standing to make it count.

We work hard, move fast, and celebrate wins together. We value clarity, ownership and curiosity, and we’re not afraid to challenge ideas to get to the best outcome – that goes both ways.

What you’ll do

  • Own delivery for your team: plan and prioritise work so commitments are met without sacrificing quality, and run agile ceremonies with a pragmatic, outcomes-first approach.
  • Set technical direction: balance feature delivery against technical debt, security and quality, and make the call on when structural investment is worth it.
  • Own incident response for your team’s systems, driving blameless root-cause analysis so the same issue doesn’t come back.
  • Lead your people: run regular 1:1s, give direct feedback, build learning and development plans, and recruit and onboard new team members.
  • Build a psychologically safe team environment where engineers do their best work and want to stay.
  • Partner with Product, Design and other stakeholders: translating roadmap priorities into engineering plans and communicating progress, risk and trade-offs clearly.
  • Remove blockers and represent your team’s work in wider engineering and business planning.
  • Track the metrics that matter: cycle time, deployment frequency, incident rates, and use them to drive real improvement, not just reporting.

We’re looking for

  • 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, including at least 2 years managing a team with direct reports.
  • A track record of shipping software on time as a team, including examples of course-correcting when delivery was at risk.
  • Experience running agile/scrum delivery in a product engineering environment.
  • Enough technical depth to review architecture and guide design decisions within your team’s domain — you don’t need to be the best coder in the room, but you need to keep up with the conversation.
  • Working knowledge of modern software delivery practices (CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, DevOps) — enough to guide technical conversations even if you’re not writing code daily..
  • The judgment to balance people management and delivery ownership without letting either one slide — and the confidence to say no when it’s the right call.
