Diversional Therapist – Memory Support Unit (Part-Time 27.5 Hours per Week)

Archer Care is seeking a compassionate and enthusiastic Diversional Therapist to join our team in a part-time role of 27.5 hours per week, primarily based within our Memory Support Unit. This is an opportunity to help residents live meaningful, engaged, and fulfilling lives while working within a supportive multidisciplinary team committed to person-centred care.

About the Role

As our Diversional Therapist, you will design and deliver engaging, therapeutic activities that support residents’ physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive wellbeing.

Working predominantly within our Memory Support Unit, you will play a key role in creating a calm, stimulating, and supportive environment for residents living with dementia. You will build meaningful relationships with residents and their families, develop individualised activity plans, and contribute to a holistic approach to care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualised activity programmes
  • Deliver meaningful group and one-to-one activities that promote wellbeing and quality of life
  • Support residents to maintain social connections, independence, identity, and enjoyment
  • Contribute to care planning, assessments, and multidisciplinary team discussions
  • Maintain accurate documentation and resident progress notes
  • Work collaboratively with nursing, care, physiotherapy, chaplaincy, volunteer, and support teams
  • Support residents experiencing cognitive decline through evidence-based, person-centred approaches
  • Respond appropriately to anxiety-related and challenging behaviours using positive de-escalation techniques
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, culturally responsive, and restraint-minimising environment
  • Coordinate outings, special events, and community engagement opportunities where appropriate

What You’ll Bring

  • NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Diversional Therapy Strand (Level 4) or equivalent, or a commitment to achieving the qualification
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Full New Zealand Driver Licence
  • Experience working with older people, particularly those living with dementia, is highly desirable
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent organisational and documentation abilities
  • A creative, flexible, and proactive approach to activity planning
  • Understanding of person-centred care principles and resident rights
  • Commitment to culturally safe practice and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles
