Description

We are seeking a qualified Veterinary Nurse specialising in Ophthalmology to join our dedicated team in Freemans Bay, Auckland. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, providing exceptional care to animals with eye-related conditions. Your expertise will be vital in supporting our veterinary surgeons and ensuring the highest standards of patient care.

Main responsibilities

  • Owner communication regarding the scheduling of appointments and advice/support as per the Ophthalmologist’s advice.
  • Communication and liaison with referring vets as appropriate.
  • Performing ophthalmic tests such as Schirmer tear tests, fluorescein staining, intraocular pressure measurement (tonometry), and vision assessments for in-patients (can be trained by the ophthalmologist for this)
  • Assistance with admission and discharge instructions as appropriate.
  • Cubex administration and stock management responsibilities at ARC Central will also be included until the ophthalmology service reaches a full time caseload.
  • General nursing duties

Hours of work

  • This is a full-time role (40 hours per week).
  • Monday to Friday roster, usually 4 days per week, with occasional additional hours for training or team requirements.

Skills and experience

  • The successful candidate will:
  • Have at least 2 years’ experience working as a veterinary nurse
  • Hold a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing or Bachelor of Veterinary Technology degree (or overseas equivalent)
  • Have an interest in ophthalmology (experience in this area is advantageous but not essential)
  • Deliver an exceptionally high standard of patient care.
  • Be confident in general nursing duties including patient handling, anaesthesia monitoring, and sample collection
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Have excellent customer service skills
  • Be a team player who is willing to support across departments when required

We have a multidisciplinary team with specialists in small animal surgery, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, oncology neurology, dermatology and critical care. We have a busy emergency service which operates from both hospitals 24/7.

We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified nurse to join our new referral ophthalmology service which is launching in August 2026. Our compassionate and experienced ophthalmology team will provide care to pets with eye conditions, from routine assessments through to complex surgical cases.

 

Our ophthalmology service will be well equipped and you will be extensively involved in assisting with surgical and medical ophthalmology cases. Full training and support will be provided to grow your knowledge in this specialised field.
