Main responsibilities
No two days will ever be the same! Here is a taste of what you will be involved in…
1. Handling and nursing care of patients with various neurological conditions e.g. spinal injuries, disc herniations, spinal fractures, vestibular disease, head trauma, seizures, meningoencephalitis/myelitis etc… including:
- TPRs and reporting abnormal values to the veterinarian
- Administering medication via various routes (PO, IV, IM, IN)
- Physiotherapy and recumbency care
- Provision of patient’s basic needs (food, water, exercise), comfort and hygiene in accordance with practice standards
2. Running consults for the neurologist, collecting a concise but thorough clinical history from the client
3. Assisting the neurologist with the neuro exam
4. Collaborating with the neurologist on plans for inpatients and procedures
5. Preparing for procedures e.g.
- Placing IV catheters and taking/running bloods using the in-house IDEXX and radiometer machines
- Preparing diagnostic samples to send out to external laboratories
- Drawing up drugs, preparing IV fluids and various constant rate infusions for procedures
- Setting up MRI, CT and surgery for procedures
- Monitoring anaesthetics that may last +3 hours long
- Taking radiographs
- Holding for ultrasounds
- Assisting in theatre
- Recovering patients from procedures
- Cleaning theatre
- Cleaning and resterilising surgical equipment
6. Preparing patients for discharge, including:
- Making up prescribed medications to go home
- Running through discharge instructions with clients e.g. post-op care and monitoring, medication instructions, and recheck appointments
7. Use ezyVet to schedule appointments, record clinical histories and notes, dispense medications/make external prescriptions, prepare & send estimates, consent forms, and payment links, update bills, and communicate with clients.
8. Use Smartflow as the main hospital chart and anaesthesia sheet for all inpatients
9. Keep up to date with emails and phone calls, including client & referring vet communication, prescription requests, and interdepartmental communications
10. Triaging emergency cases following ARC protocols, including obtaining a quick and concise pertinent history, stabilisation and assisting with veterinary assessment as necessary, and performing CPR according to the RECOVER guidelines
11. Assisting other clinical team members and departments as required
12. Maintaining high standards of infection control and hospital cleanliness
Hours of work
- 80 hours per fortnight
- Days of work will be 4 days per week, there is currently no expectation for weekend cover, although this may change in the future.
- Some of our days can run long with procedures, so flexibility about finish times is requested.
Skills and experience
The successful candidate will:
- Have at least 2 years experience working as a veterinary nurse and/or hold a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing or Bachelor of Veterinary Technology degree (or overseas equivalent)
- Put a strong emphasis on teamwork and communication. A positive attitude and willingness to work collaboratively is a must.
- Be competent monitoring anaesthetics, able to troubleshoot problems or identify when things are not normal (BP, ECG, ETCO2). We often have anaesthetics that are not straight forward, require ventilation, and which last +3 hours long
- Be physically able to be inside an MRI room as majority of our procedures involve MRI. Certain implants e.g. pacemaker, glucose monitors etc… are not MRI compatible and are a health and safety hazard.
- Be willing and able to work late for emergency procedures as needed
- Feel confident working independently and without supervision at times
- Be able to think clearly and quickly under pressure
- Have good time management skills and ability to prioritise tasks.
