We are currently seeking full-time and part-time Emergency Veterinarians to join our growing team at ARC Central in Auckland.

Roster & Shift Structure

We believe transparency is important when considering a career in emergency medicine. Typical scheduling for this role includes:

  • 75–80 hours worked per fortnight, as per roster
  • Most shifts are 12.5-hour shifts:

Day Shift: 6:00am–6:30pm

Night Shift: 6:00pm–6:30am

  • Consulting shifts are typically:

2:00pm–12:00am

  • Approximately two weekends worked per four-week roster block
  • Public holiday shifts are paid at the applicable higher rate and include alternative leave entitlements
  • Rostering preferences are considered wherever possible, and we strive to create schedules that support both excellent patient care and work-life balance

 

The Role

As an Emergency Veterinarian, you’ll provide first-line emergency, critical care, and urgent medical services while working closely with our specialist teams.

You will manage a broad and rewarding caseload including:

  • Trauma patients
  • Toxicities
  • Respiratory emergencies
  • Sepsis
  • Endocrine emergencies
  • Neurologic emergencies
  • Emergency surgeries
  • Critical care and ICU patients
  • Referral and specialist inpatients

Responsibilities include:

  • Emergency assessment, stabilisation, and treatment
  • Diagnostic investigation and case management
  • Emergency surgical procedures
  • Critical care monitoring and management
  • Client communication and education
  • Collaboration with specialists and referring veterinarians
  • Preparation of clinical records, referral correspondence, and discharge summaries

Surgical mentorship and support are available for less experienced emergency clinicians.

What We’re Looking For

  • BVSc or equivalent degree recognised by the Veterinary Council of New Zealand
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand (visa support may be available)
  • Minimum of 2 years of small animal clinical experience or completion of a rotating internship
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Commitment to excellent patient care and high clinical standards
  • Positive, adaptable attitude and willingness to learn

Emergency experience or completion of a rotating internship is highly preferred, but not required for the right candidate.
