ABOUT US:

Yorgum was established in 1991 by a group of Aboriginal women, some of whom worked in women’s refuges, who were concerned about the lack of appropriate counselling support for Aboriginal people experiencing spiritual, emotional and psychological pain. They founded a service with a ‘healing’ approach rather than an ongoing, crisis-driven ‘patch-up’ approach.

Yorgum offers all Aboriginal people and their families autonomous, community-based healing services that are culturally secure, trauma-informed and work within an Aboriginal Family Worldview.

The Role:

The Mental Health Counsellor supports Aboriginal children, young people, adults and families to strengthen social and emotional wellbeing through culturally secure, trauma-informed healing practices. Working within an Aboriginal Family Worldview, the role recognises the importance of family, culture, Country, community and spirituality in healing, while providing counselling, advocacy and therapeutic support for people impacted by trauma, grief, loss, family violence, child sexual abuse, racism and intergenerational trauma

SELECTION Criteria:

Relevant tertiary qualification in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, Mental Health, Social and Emotional Wellbeing, or a related discipline.

Demonstrated experience working with individuals and families impacted by trauma, grief and loss.

Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed practice and its application within Aboriginal environment.

 Demonstrated ability to deliver culturally secure and person-centered healing services.

Demonstrated experience providing evidence-based, individual and group, psychological interventions to youth and adults with mental health issues.

Demonstrated experience in risk assessment and safety planning to clients experiencing suicidal

ideation or issues of self-harm.

Demonstrated high level interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) and proven ability to build and maintain relationships.

Demonstrated organisational and time management skills and use initiative to work both independently and as part of a team.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL NEED TO SUPPLY:

•           A Valid Driver’s License

•           National Police Certificate, not less than six (6) months old

•           Working with Children Check
