Description

About Vitrafy Life Sciences

Vitrafy Life Sciences is an Australian med-tech and biotech innovation leader headquartered in Ballarat, Victoria. We develop advanced cryopreservation and biobanking technologies that enable the safe and effective storage of biological samples, from individual cells to complex tissue systems. Our patented platform technology supports applications across pharmaceuticals, regenerative medicine, cellular therapies, and vaccine development.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechatronics Engineer to join our multidisciplinary R&D team. This role involves the design, development, integration, and optimization of mechatronic systems that power our life science products. You will work across mechanical design, electronics, automation, and embedded systems to help us push the boundaries of precision cryopreservation.

The role includes hands-on work within our refrigeration unit production line, installing and integrating sensors, commissioning and validating control systems, and performing end-of-line performance testing to ensure each unit meets design and quality specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of mechatronic components and systems for cryogenic and medical devices, through to validation and medical device approval.
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, microcontrollers, and control systems to deliver reliable, high-performance platforms.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and biomedical teams to develop and test new product concepts.
  • Program and debug embedded systems and control algorithms, including PID temperature control and real-time data acquisition.
  • Lead rapid prototyping, product iteration, and technology scale-up activities within your area of ownership.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including design specifications, schematics, and testing protocols.
  • Assist in regulatory compliance (e.g. ISO 13485, GMP) for medical and life science applications.
  • Provide engineering support for manufacturing and field deployment of mechatronic systems.
  • Participate in R&D projects and contribute to intellectual property development.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering with mechatronic experience).
  • 5+ years industry experience in a hands-on mechatronics role, including demonstrated end-to-end delivery of mechatronic features or subsystems.
  • Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or equivalent), circuit design, and embedded programming (e.g. C/C++, Python).
  • Strong understanding of sensors, actuators, motion control, and embedded systems.
  • Proven experience independently integrating and debugging systems across hardware/software boundaries.
  • Ability to execute independently on defined engineering problems, applying sound judgement to established design patterns with limited oversight, and to escalate appropriately when scope or risk changes.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Desirable:

  • Experience in regulated industries (medical devices, pharmaceuticals, biotech).
  • Familiarity with cryogenics, thermodynamics, or temperature-sensitive systems.
  • Experience with heat pump refrigeration systems
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and risk management processes (e.g. FMEA, DFMEA).
  • Position Title: Senior Mechatronics EngineerExposure to MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, or similar engineering tools.
