Vehicle Dealers International (VDI) is the sole Australian distributor of Yutong buses. In Western Australia, VDI operates both the Perth IVECO dealership and Yutong Bus Centre WA, providing industry-leading sales, service, and parts support to commercial transport operators across the state. 

We are seeking a motivated and hands-on leader to oversee our workshop operations. In this role, you will drive workshop performance, lead and develop a skilled team of technicians, ensure the highest standards of repair quality, deliver exceptional customer service, and maintain a strong focus on safety, compliance, and operational efficiency. 

About the Role 

The Assistant Service Manager is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management of workshop operations across the Perth Team. The Assistant Service Manager will utilise their heavy vehicle mechanical experience to support technicians with diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair planning, and technical escalations while maintaining operational oversight of workshop performance, productivity and service delivery.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead and oversee the day-to-day operations of the workshops, ensuring productivity, efficiency and service standards are achieved  
  • Coordinate workshop workflow, technician utilisation and job allocation to maximise labour recovery and customer satisfaction  
  • Act as the primary escalation point for complex diagnostics, troubleshooting and technical enquiries  
  • Liaise with OEM technical support teams where required to resolve complex vehicle issues 
  • Supervise, mentor and develop workshop technicians and apprentices 
  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding and succession planning activities as required 
  • Work closely with Service Advisors and the Warranty team to ensure effective communication and coordination of repair activities  
  • Monitor workshop capacity and resources to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and within agreed timelines 
  • Support the WA Warranty & Service Manager in delivering operational objectives and business outcomes 

About You  

To be successful in this role, you will have: 

  • Proven experience in a Workshop Manager, Workshop Supervisor, Leading Hand, Foreman or similar leadership role in a heavy vehicle workshop environment 
  • Strong diagnostic, troubleshooting and fault-finding capabilities across heavy vehicles  
  • Sound understanding of workshop operations, workflow management and technician productivity  
  • Ability to provide technical guidance, coaching and support to technicians and apprentices  
  • Sound understanding of warranty processes, repair documentation and workshop systems  
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills  
  • Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable operating across multiple sites  
  • Computer literacy and experience using workshop management systems such as Pentana or similar 
  • Trade qualified Heavy Vehicle Mechanic (Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology or equivalent)
  • HR Driver’s Licence (desirable) 
  • Forklift Licence (desirable)
