Description

At Unita, we build spaces where people love to work, shop, stay and connect – from high-end retail and hospitality, to health and commercial fitouts across Australia. But great spaces don’t build themselves. Great teams do.

People have always been at the heart of what we do. From humble beginnings to national growth, our ambition has never outweighed our values. We’re fuelled by a shared passion to build better, together.

As our QLD Fitout team continues to grow, we’re creating a new Project Director role to lead our project delivery team and strengthen performance across our portfolio.

This is a senior leadership role with real influence across our people, projects, commercial performance and client outcomes.

The role

Reporting to the General Manager, you’ll lead our QLD Fitout project delivery team of PMs, CAs and PCs across a portfolio of projects ranging from $500k to $10m, with approximately 15 live projects underway at any one time.

You’ll create clarity and accountability across the team, maintain strong oversight of project health and make sure delivery, commercial and contractual risks are acted on early. You’ll bring experienced judgement to complex decisions, coach the team to solve problems and step in when senior leadership is needed.

You’ll also drive commercial performance across the portfolio – strengthening forecasting, cost control, cashflow and margin – while directly leading selected complex or high-risk projects where your experience can have the greatest impact.

What great looks like

  • A high-performing project delivery team with clear expectations and strong accountability
  • Projects are set up well, with realistic programmes and early visibility of risk
  • Target margins are achieved or improved through strong cost control and early commercial action
  • Project health is understood and issues are addressed before they escalate
  • Delivery, commercial and contractual risks are managed at the right level
  • Clients trust how we deliver and choose to work with us again

Who this role suits

This role suits an experienced project leader who gets results through people, not by being the person who solves every problem.

You’ll bring deep project delivery experience, strong commercial judgement and the confidence to coach, challenge and make difficult calls when needed. You know how to stay close enough to understand what’s happening across projects while giving capable people the space and accountability to lead.

People who thrive in this role are:

  • Experienced project leaders who bring sound judgement to complex projects and decisions
  • Commercially astute, with a strong understanding of margin, cash, contracts and risk
  • Strong people leaders who create clarity, build capability and hold others accountable
  • Calm and credible through complex or challenging situations
  • Trusted relationship builders who communicate clearly and follow through
  • Naturally aligned to the Unita Way – taking responsibility, working well with others and always looking for better ways to do things

Experience we’re looking for

  • Extensive project delivery leadership experience within fitout or construction
  • Experience overseeing complex or high-risk projects
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing project delivery teams
  • Strong commercial and contractual judgement
  • Experience managing senior client relationships and complex stakeholders
  • Trade and/or tertiary qualifications in Construction or Construction Management
  • General Construction Induction Card
  • Certificate IV in WHS (desired)
  • Driver’s licence
