About the Opportunity 

As Australia’s renewable energy sector continues to expand and the need to balance development with conservation outcomes grows, exciting opportunities are emerging across our NSW Ecology team. 

We are seeking Expressions of Interest from passionate Ecologists and Field Ecologists who are looking to start or advance their career in ecological consulting. This is an exciting opportunity to work on diverse and meaningful projects across a range of sectors, while developing your technical expertise and learning from a team of highly experienced ecological professionals. 

We welcome applications from recent graduates, early career professionals, and experienced ecologists with ecological field experience. Whether you are building your career or bringing established skills to the role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to a variety of ecological projects while further developing your expertise in vegetation and flora identification, targeted species surveys, and ecological assessment methodologies. 

While the Ecology role is primarily field based, Umwelt offers clear pathways for professional development, with opportunities to expand into technical reporting, project management, and specialist ecological expertise as your career progresses. 

Location: Newcastle (preferred)

About You 

You are a motivated and enthusiastic ecologist who is passionate about environmental outcomes and enjoys working both independently and as part of a team. 

You will ideally bring:  

  • A degree or postgraduate qualification in Environmental Science, Ecology, Botany, Zoology, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline 
  • Experience undertaking ecological field surveys and a demonstrated interest in flora and/or fauna 
  • A willingness to travel and work flexible hours to support field programs, including extended trips to regional and remote locations 
  • Knowledge of or experience working with NSW Plant Community Types (highly regarded) 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with colleagues, clients and regulatory stakeholders 
  • The ability to work effectively both autonomously and within multidisciplinary teams 
  • Experience using GIS and electronic field data capture systems 
  • A strong commitment to workplace health, safety and environmental practices
