Description

About Syenta

Syenta is pioneering a new era in semiconductor manufacturing with our groundbreaking Localised Electrochemical Manufacturing (LEM) technology. Our platform enables advanced packaging by combining patterning and metallisation into a single tool. We achieve high-speed, high-resolution metallisation at lower costs and energy use, while minimizing emissions and waste.

Founded in Australia, we are building a world-class team of engineers and scientists tackling some of the toughest challenges in semiconductor manufacturing. Our collaborative, people-first culture empowers individuals to take ownership, innovate, and deliver breakthrough results.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Mechatronics Engineer to drive the design, development, and commissioning of advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment. This role is heavily focused on electronics, control systems, and automation software, while requiring a solid understanding of mechanical systems.

You will lead the creation of smart, integrated machines by designing control architectures, specifying sensors and actuators, and developing PLC and machine-level control software. You will collaborate across mechanical, software, and systems teams to deliver reliable, high-performance manufacturing equipment.

This is a high-impact role in a fast-growing startup environment, offering the chance to shape Syenta’s equipment roadmap and establish best practices for controls and electronics engineering.

Responsibilities

Controls & Electronics Design

  • Design and implement control systems for advanced manufacturing equipment
  • Select and specify electronic components including sensors, actuators, motors, drives, and controllers
  • Collaborate with mechanical and software engineers to deliver fully integrated solutions
  • Design electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts
  • Contribute to system architecture decisions, design reviews, and documentation

Commissioning & Troubleshooting

  • Commission, test, and debug complex electromechanical systems
  • Develop and implement machine safety systems in compliance with relevant standards
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, and integration issues across multiple disciplines
  • Support continuous improvement of manufacturing equipment performance and reliability

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Act as the go-to expert for controls, electronics, and automation within the team
  • Establish engineering standards, best practices, and workflows for controls development
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly to internal teams and stakeholders

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or equivalent
  • 7+ years’ experience in mechatronics, controls engineering, or automation
  • Control system programming experience including function blocks, PID loops, and state machines — CODESYS preferred, but experience with other PLC programming environments is acceptable
  • Demonstrated experience programming motion systems, digital and analog I/O, pneumatics, and optical systems
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (EtherCAT, Modbus, OPC-UA)
  • Electrical component selection: I/O modules, motor drives, motion stages, and related hardware
  • Pneumatic component selection: digital regulators, solenoids, sensors, and related hardware
  • Sensor specification and selection across pneumatic, presence, force, and vision domains
  • Working proficiency with CAD — capable of producing functional models without needing to be a CAD specialist
  • Experience managing interfaces between control systems and adjacent layers, including Syenta’s data software stack
  • Experience commissioning and troubleshooting complex electromechanical equipment
  • Strong problem-solving, initiative, and communication skills
  • Experience in semiconductor equipment, precision manufacturing, robotics, or industrial automation is highly desirable

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with PCB design (KiCAD preferred)
  • Experience with high-growth or startup environments
  • Familiarity with simulation and control system tools (MATLAB/Simulink)
  • Knowledge of machine safety standards (ISO 13849, IEC 62443)
