Description

The world is embarking on a rapid journey to completely transform where our electricity comes from. It’s the biggest slice of solving the climate crisis. Australia is at the cutting edge of this transition, and SwitchDin is working at the forefront of innovation in the sector.

Our mission: To build the technology platform needed to shift from centralised energy grids to the smart grids of the future, where renewable generation, energy storage, and smart devices reign.

We’re a Renewable Energy SaaS company, an Australian business with global reach. Our cloud platforms address the scale-out issues of the orchestration of distributed energy resources (DER), enabling better power system management, and broader usage of renewable sources. Our team is a group of dedicated, intelligent, and genuine people who are down-to-earth and super passionate about what we do.

We’ve recently been funded for growth, and we’re welcoming in a new tranche of smart, motivated software engineers to help us accelerate our mission. If you’re looking for meaningful work that allows you to contribute to a mission you believe in, and the opportunity to be part of a local tech startup

success story, you will fit right in.

Why join now?

In a word: Purpose. We are about enabling extremely important step changes. What we’re doing matters, it has an impact, and there is an incredible journey in front of us. You can help us find innovative solutions to large-scale problems, and change the way the world’s energy systems work.

The world has embarked on an energy transformation. Globally, we’re deploying solar PV generation equivalent to 100 coal-fired power stations each year. With this tsunami of renewables our grids are changing to include millions of little distributed power plants, as well as storage, EVs, and controllable loads. That all needs to be orchestrated at levels big and small to keep our complex energy infrastructure working, and power flowing to everyone. This requires a high-scale, ultra-reliable and secure blend of cloud, IoT, and intelligence to power the future power grid. We are building that system.

About the role

We’re looking for experienced software engineers to join our tight-knit, agile team of engineers. This team works together like an elite task force across most of SwitchDin’s technology stack, enhancing our products with new capabilities for customer projects. We dive in and get our hands dirty wherever is necessary to. We’re like the Special Forces Unit of SwitchDin Engineering!

Below are some particular areas of development work we’ll typically focus on. Ideally you’ll have expertise in one or more of these (but you definitely don’t need all of them!):

Cloud-native Applications

  • Data Streaming Architectures & Backend Development
  • Third-Party Cloud API Integrations
  • Internet of Things (IoT) Development & Hardware Integration
  • Public API Development

We’re still a startup, so we rely on people being comfortable in T-shaped roles that will see them wearing different hats during the day and across the year. This team in particular will suit people who are used to switching between highly-technical projects on a scale of weeks to months.

Who are we looking for?

To be successful on our team, you’ll need to be someone who loves building things with software not just a programmer, but someone who collaborates with others to design, build, deploy and manage large systems experienced in roles that have built your maturity across multiple areas of software development familiar with Python, and willing to become an expert in it across the basics of modern development like git, Docker, CD pipelines excited about the challenge of building a world-class system.

If you have experience in one or more of these areas, we’ll be very excited to talk to you, but you don’t need any of them to apply:

  • cloud infrastructure
  • algorithms, data structures, and patterns
  • programming for IoT devices
  • integrating software with 3rd party hardware
  • an electrical engineering or mechatronics background or experience

What you’ll be working on

We’re forging T-/M-shaped Engineers at SwitchDin, with broad and deep capabilities spanning product development end-to-end. In addition to interfacing with the Product team from concept to build, leveraging your core competencies in your particular domain of engineering, you’ll also get exposure to the following areas:

Frontend-Backend

  • Angular and/or React front-end frameworks using TypeScript
  • Classic deployment patterns as well as k8s and Serverless e.g. AWS Lambda
  • Cloud and Object Storage database technologies
  • Python (and some Rust, where appropriate)

Cloud

  • AWS and Kubernetes (k8s) declarative infrastructure w/Ansible and Terraform
  • Cloud Native applications
  • AWS IoT Core and Greengrass
  • Continuous Delivery and robust pipelines
  • Observability/Monitoring, Security (SIEM) and ISO27001

Edge

  • Embedded Yocto Linux-based IoT edge devices, OTA updates, watchdogs and recovery, release and testing processes
  • Drivers for inverter and battery systems using Modbus and other protocols
  • Device security including TPM, encryption, PKI
  • Energy protocols such as IEEE 2030.5, CSIP-AUS, OpenADR, OCPP
  • On-device and installer-driven provisioning and commissioning tooling
  • Diagnosing and resolving issues on a live deployed fleet

Ways of Working

We’re a remote-first company. Our headquarters is in beautiful Newcastle, NSW – 2 hours north of Sydney. You can be anywhere in Australia (but the closer to the Eastern timezone the better!).

We’re primarily a product company, with our product roadmap being largely driven by projects we partner on with large, household name customers.

As a a software engineer, you’ll be working with many people across the company, including pre-sales technical staff, product managers, customer support, customers and partners, and of course lots of engineers in your own team and other teams.

We’re small on hierarchy and big on transparency. No role is more than 3 hops from the CEO, and the head of each department shares what’s happening in their area at the weekly company all-hands.
