Stone Axe Pastoral is looking for a Breeding & Genetics Officer to help drive one of Australia’s most ambitious Wagyu breeding programs. This is a rare opportunity to combine hands-on cattle work with cutting-edge genetic analysis, influencing breeding decisions across a large-scale, fully integrated Wagyu supply chain.

Based in our Fortitude Valley, Brisbane office, you’ll spend plenty of time in the field, travelling across our network of properties to support joining programs, pregnancy testing, weaning, genetic evaluations, and breeder selection activities.

About the Role

Reporting to the Group Manager – Breeding and Genetics, you’ll play a key role in delivering breeding programs across our property network and helping maximise genetic gain throughout the herd.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting joining, pregnancy testing, calving, weaning and breeder management programs.
  • Maintaining accurate herd, breeding and genetic records.
  • Assisting with sire and breeder selection, replacement planning and culling decisions.
  • Analysing performance and genetic data to support business decisions.
  • Working closely with property managers, veterinarians, nutritionists and genetics providers.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement in breeding protocols and data collection standards.
  • Ensuring strong animal welfare, biosecurity and safety outcomes. 

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who is equally comfortable in the yards and behind a spreadsheet.

You’ll bring:

✅ Experience in commercial cattle breeding operations

✅ Knowledge of joining, pregnancy testing, weaning and genetic evaluation

✅ Strong cattle handling skills and confidence working in livestock environments

✅ Excellent attention to detail and data management capability

✅ A willingness to travel extensively across regional and remote properties

✅ A passion for genetic improvement and herd performance outcomes

Highly regarded:

  • Wagyu or premium beef breeding experience
  • BREEDPLAN experience
  • Exposure to feedlot operations
  • Strong Excel and Power BI skills
