Software Delivery Lead

Position Overview

The Software Delivery Lead is responsible for leading multidisciplinary Agile delivery teams to successfully deliver software products, platforms and digital services that achieve measurable business outcomes.

The role provides leadership across delivery planning, execution, stakeholder engagement, team performance, risk management and continuous improvement, ensuring solutions are delivered to agreed scope, quality, budget and timeframes.

As a key interface between business stakeholders, Product Owners, architecture and technical delivery teams, the Software Delivery Lead creates alignment across business and technology and fosters a collaborative, accountable and high-performing delivery environment.

Key Responsibilities

Delivery Leadership

• Lead the end-to-end delivery of complex software development and digital initiatives.
• Establish and maintain delivery plans, release schedules, milestones and iteration objectives.
• Ensure delivery commitments are aligned with strategic priorities, business requirements and team capacity.
• Monitor delivery progress and proactively manage risks, issues, dependencies and impediments.
• Coordinate multiple delivery workstreams and competing priorities.
• Drive predictable, sustainable and high-quality delivery outcomes.
• Maintain accountability for agreed scope, quality, budget and delivery timeframes.
• Ensure delivery teams have clear priorities, objectives and expected outcomes.

Agile Delivery Management

• Lead Agile delivery practices across multidisciplinary technology teams.
• Facilitate sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily delivery activities, reviews, retrospectives and release planning.
• Work closely with Product Owners to maintain appropriately prioritised and delivery-ready backlogs.
• Lead and support cross-functional teams including developers, testers, business analysts, architects, UX specialists and DevOps engineers.
• Support effective estimation, capacity planning, forecasting and delivery reporting.
• Identify and remove delivery blockers and facilitate timely decision-making.
• Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Build trusted relationships with clients, business stakeholders, Product Owners, project sponsors and senior leadership.
• Act as a key bridge between business and technical delivery teams.
• Translate business priorities and requirements into actionable delivery plans and roadmaps.
• Facilitate workshops, planning sessions and delivery discussions.
• Provide clear and transparent reporting on delivery status, risks, issues, dependencies and outcomes.
• Manage stakeholder expectations and maintain alignment throughout the delivery lifecycle.
• Facilitate resolution of complex delivery issues and competing stakeholder priorities.

Governance, Risk & Quality

• Establish appropriate delivery governance and reporting practices.
• Identify, assess and actively manage delivery risks, issues and dependencies.
• Ensure appropriate quality assurance and testing practices are incorporated throughout delivery.
• Ensure solutions and delivery activities align with agreed governance, security and operational requirements.
• Maintain appropriate delivery documentation, decisions and reporting.
• Escalate significant risks and issues where required while driving practical resolution.

Delivery Performance & Continuous Improvement

• Establish and monitor relevant delivery metrics and performance indicators.
• Use delivery data to improve forecasting and decision-making.
• Identify opportunities to improve delivery speed, quality and predictability.
• Promote effective Agile, DevOps and continuous delivery practices.
• Support improvements to software delivery processes, tools and ways of working.
• Encourage knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across delivery teams.

Skills & Experience

• Strong experience leading multidisciplinary Agile software delivery teams.
• Demonstrated experience delivering complex software, technology and digital initiatives.
• Strong understanding of Agile frameworks, principles and delivery practices.
• Experience coordinating software development, testing, architecture, DevOps and release management activities.
• Proven ability to manage multiple workstreams and competing priorities.
• Strong delivery planning, estimation, forecasting and reporting capability.
• Strong risk, issue and dependency management skills.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management capability.
• Confidence working with senior business and technology stakeholders.
• Strong facilitation, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to bring structure and clarity to complex or ambiguous delivery environments.

Technical & Delivery Knowledge

Experience or a strong working understanding of:

• Modern software development lifecycle practices
• Agile software delivery
• Cloud-based technology environments
• CI/CD pipelines
• DevOps practices
• Software testing and quality assurance
• Release and deployment management
• Modern software engineering practices

The Software Delivery Lead is not expected to be the primary developer or solution architect, but must have sufficient technical understanding to effectively lead software delivery teams and engage confidently with developers, architects, DevOps engineers and other technical specialists.

Qualifications & Certifications

Relevant qualifications in technology, project management, business or a related discipline are desirable.

Certifications such as the following will be highly regarded:

• Scrum Master
• SAFe
• PMP
• PRINCE2 Agile
• Other recognised Agile or delivery management certifications
