About the role 

The Senior Communications and Content Advisor reports to the Head of Communications and Advocacy and leads the development and delivery of high-quality content that supports SANE’s strategic objectives, strengthens audience engagement, and enhances organisational profile and impact. The role works closely with staff, people with lived experience, external suppliers and leaders to support SANE’s brand, fundraising, partnerships and advocacy initiatives. A key aspect of the role is engaging respectfully and collaboratively with people with lived experience. 

As a skilled writer, editor and storyteller, the role develops content across multiple channels, leads content campaigns, amplifies lived experience stories, and translates complex information into engaging communications. The position also maintains relevant procedures and supports the development and delivery of internal communications as required. SANE welcomes applications from candidates who bring their own lived experience of complex mental health challenges. 

Key responsibilities of this role include, but not limited to:

  • Deliver strategic communications initiatives aligned with organisational priorities.
  • Lead the development and implementation of SANE’s content and editorial strategy.
  • Ensure all communications align with SANE’s brand, tone of voice, accessibility standards and strategic goals.
  • Develop compelling stories and content that demonstrate SANE’s impact and support advocacy, fundraising and service objectives. 
  • Lead organisation-wide communication planning across multiple channels and audiences. 
  • Drive continuous improvement in communications practice through audience insights, analytics and emerging sector trends. 
  • Mentor colleagues and build organisational capability in communications and storytelling. 

 

About You 

Qualification & Experience 

  • Degree qualification in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field. 
  • Significant experience developing and delivering communications initiatives across digital and traditional channels. 
  • Experience working in complex not-for-profit, government or service-based environments. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop engaging, audience-focused content informed by research, data and evidence. 
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes to tight deadlines. 
  • Experience leading cross-functional communications projects and influencing outcomes across multiple business areas. 
  • Experience identifying and managing communications and reputational risks. 
  • Proficiency in using audience insights, analytics and performance data to inform communication and campaign strategies. 

 

Skills, Knowledge & Personal Attributes 

  • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging content. 
  • Strong project management, organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to deliver outcomes in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, collaborate across teams and influence stakeholders at all levels without direct authority. 
  • Strategic thinker with experience in reputation management, stakeholder engagement, issues management and aligning communications to organisational objectives. 
  • Ability to identify opportunities for continuous improvement, analyse performance data and implement practical enhancements. 
  • Proven ability to work autonomously, provide specialist guidance, and build effective relationships with senior leaders and stakeholders. 
  • High attention to detail, with a collaborative, proactive and solutions-focused approach 
  • An understanding of the experiences of people affected by mental health challenges and recognition of the expertise, perspectives and contributions this community brings.
