About RSPCA Queensland
For more than 140 years, RSPCA Queensland has been a leading animal welfare charity, dedicated to improving the lives of animals – whether domestic, farmed, or native. We care for over 42,000 animals annually, relying on the generosity of animal lovers like you to fund 91% of our life-changing services.
Our Purpose: We exist for animals to live better lives.
About the Role
Stories have the power to inspire action, shape public perception and drive meaningful change. As Media Advisor, you’ll play a key role in helping RSPCA Queensland tell the stories that matter most while protecting and enhancing the reputation of one of Queensland’s most recognised and trusted charities.
Working as part of our Marketing and Communications team, you’ll lead proactive media engagement, build strong relationships with journalists and media outlets and support the organisation through both everyday media opportunities and high-profile or sensitive issues. This is a dynamic role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys thinking strategically and is passionate about using communication to create real impact for animals and the communities that support them.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an experienced media and communications professional who knows how to turn complex information into compelling stories and build trusted relationships that create meaningful media opportunities. You’ll be a strategic thinker with exceptional judgement, confident managing competing priorities and able to remain calm and composed when navigating high-profile or sensitive issues.
You’ll bring outstanding writing and communication skills, a proactive mindset and a collaborative approach, with the ability to influence, advise and partner effectively with stakeholders at all levels. Whether you’re pitching a feel-good rescue story, preparing a spokesperson for an interview or responding to a challenging media enquiry, you’ll have the confidence, professionalism and sound judgement to represent RSPCA Queensland with credibility and care.
What You’ll Do
In this role, you will:
- Develop and deliver proactive media strategies that promote RSPCA Queensland’s work, impact and advocacy priorities.
- Draft and distribute media releases, statements, briefing notes, pitches and key messages.
- Manage incoming media enquiries and coordinate timely, accurate responses.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, producers and media outlets.
- Prepare spokespeople for media opportunities through briefing materials and strategic guidance.
- Coordinate interviews and media appearances.
- Support issues and crisis communications, including preparing statements, FAQs and media responses.
- Monitor media coverage and identify emerging risks and opportunities.
- Collaborate with internal teams to uncover compelling stories that support advocacy, fundraising and community engagement campaigns.
- Contribute to broader communications initiatives and maintain a consistent organisational voice across external communications.
What You’ll Bring to the Role
- A degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or a related discipline.
- 3-5 years’ experience in media relations, public relations or journalism.
- Demonstrated experience managing media enquiries and developing high-quality media materials.
- Experience supporting issues and crisis communications in a complex environment.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to tailor messaging for different audiences.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and experience partnering with senior leaders.
- Established relationships with journalists and media outlets will be highly regarded.
- Experience using media monitoring and reporting tools.
- Excellent judgement, resilience and the ability to perform under pressure.
- A proactive, collaborative and adaptable approach, with exceptional attention to detail.
- Experience within the not-for-profit, advocacy, government or animal welfare sectors will be highly regarded.
