New graduate Maternal and Child Health Nurses, and current Maternal and Child Health Nurses students expected to graduate at the end of 2026, are encouraged to apply.

Summary:

This is an opportunity for a new graduate to commence their Maternal and Child Health career within a supportive, structured and culturally responsive environment, with dedicated supervision, mentoring and education to support their development into a confident, capable and autonomous Maternal and Child Health Practitioner.

Where a new graduate is appointed to the position, Ramahyuck will provide a structured graduate support program designed to support the transition from novice to autonomous Maternal and Child Health Practitioner.

This program will provide dedicated clinical supervision, mentoring, education and protected time for learning, allowing the graduate to progressively develop their clinical confidence, capability and independence within the Maternal and Child Health role and an Aboriginal community-controlled health setting. The graduate support program will also include:

• Additional time for appointments to support learning, assessment, clinical development and the gradual increase of clinical responsibility and autonomy.
• Daily debriefing and clinical reflection with the Maternal and Child Health Nurse.
• Monthly professional education sessions relevant to Maternal and Child Health practice.
• Aboriginal-specific cultural training to support culturally safe and responsive practice within an Aboriginal community-controlled health organisation.
• Opportunities to participate in Aboriginal cultural education, workshops and professional development, as applicable and available.
• Ongoing opportunities for professional development and supported learning within the Ramahyuck Maternal and Child Health Program.

Responsibilities:

The Aboriginal Maternal and Child Health Nurse provides evidence-based Maternal and Child Health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families from birth to school entry. The role is built on respectful relationships with children, parents, carers, Elders and extended family. It recognises the strengths within families and the importance of culture, kinship and community in raising children. The Aboriginal Maternal and Child Health Nurse will provide support and be responsible for providing post-natal care and education in the areas of nutrition, contraception, and infant health needs.  They will be responsible for referrals onto other organisations as required, such as Housing, Social Work, Maternal and Child Health and Parenting Programs.

Qualifications:

• Registered Nurse with a degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification.
• Postgraduate qualification in Maternal and Child Health Nursing is preferred.
• Experience working with Aboriginal communities and understanding of cultural sensitivities.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel within the community.
