Description

About the Role

PSD Energy is seeking a Mechanical Engineer – Solar to join our growing Solar team.

This role will support the design, development, technical coordination and delivery of utility-scale solar photovoltaic projects and associated infrastructure. Working closely with project, engineering, construction, commissioning, quality and health, safety, environment and quality teams, you will help ensure solar designs are safe, practical, constructible, efficient and aligned with project requirements.

You will contribute across tendering, design development, construction, commissioning and project close-out, using engineering design tools, computer-aided design software and solar modelling platforms to support high-quality project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing and reviewing design documentation for utility-scale solar projects, including site layouts, single line diagrams, cable schedules, stringing plans and equipment layouts
  • Preparing engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, technical schedules, design reports and work packs
  • Using AutoCAD and solar design software such as PVSyst, Helioscope or equivalent platforms
  • Supporting redline mark-ups, as-built updates and close-out documentation
  • Conducting technical analysis, modelling and simulations to inform design decisions and optimise solar plant performance
  • Assessing constructability, access, topography, shading, cable routing, equipment locations, maintenance access and site constraints
  • Supporting the selection and review of photovoltaic modules, inverters, combiner boxes, mounting systems, cables, earthing, monitoring equipment and balance-of-system components
  • Providing technical input into value engineering, design risk reviews, procurement decisions and project delivery planning
  • Providing engineering support to project managers, construction managers and site teams during construction and commissioning
  • Responding to technical queries, requests for information and design clarification requests
  • Reviewing supplier, subcontractor and vendor documentation for alignment with project requirements and design intent
  • Attending site visits as required to assess design requirements, installation progress, constructability and compliance
  • Supporting commissioning readiness, punch-list close-out, defect resolution and handover activities
  • Applying safety in design principles and assisting with the identification and control of design-related hazards
  • Participating in design reviews, interdisciplinary checks, constructability reviews and technical verification activities
  • Maintaining accurate engineering records, drawing registers, design calculations and supporting project documentation
  • Collaborating with civil engineers, electrical engineers, site supervisors, procurement, estimating, commissioning and other project stakeholders
  • Supporting tender and proposal development through technical input, design documentation, quantities and engineering advice

About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring strong technical capability, attention to detail and a practical approach to solar engineering and project delivery.

You will ideally have:

  • Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Renewable Energy or a related engineering discipline
  • 3–5 years’ experience in solar engineering, renewable energy, power systems, engineering, procurement and construction delivery, infrastructure, utilities or a comparable engineering environment
  • Experience on utility-scale solar photovoltaic projects, highly regarded
  • Experience supporting construction, commissioning or site-based project delivery, highly regarded
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and relevant solar photovoltaic design or modelling software
  • Strong understanding of solar photovoltaic system design, site layouts, cable routing, direct current and alternating current interfaces, inverter stations, earthing principles and balance-of-system components
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, standards, design reports and project requirements
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical writing skills
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary project environment
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and support multiple project workstreams
  • Current driver’s licence

Desirable Requirements

The following will be highly regarded:

  • Construction Induction Card, commonly known as a White Card
  • Professional registration or accreditation, such as Chartered Professional Engineer, National Engineering Register, Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland, Registered Professional Engineer of Victoria or other relevant state-based engineering registration
  • Training or demonstrated competency in AutoCAD, PVSyst, Helioscope or equivalent engineering/design software
  • Knowledge of applicable Australian Standards, International Electrotechnical Commission requirements, grid connection requirements and safety in design principles
  • Experience with engineering document control, drawing registers, design reviews and quality assurance processes
