About Us

The Alliance is Australia’s national voice for Indigenous employment and training. We are the only Indigenous-led peak body solely focused on this sector. As an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) we are governed by an Indigenous board and led by an Indigenous CEO.  We connect and enable the ecosystem: advocating for our member organisations with government and big business, building the evidence base that shapes policy, and giving industry the tools and expertise to make Indigenous employment commitments real.  Founded in 2023, we are independently governed, evidence-based and already making change happen through policy influence, national research and a growing membership that spans urban, regional and remote Australia.

Role Overview

The Head of Communications will lead The Alliance’s communications function, shaping and delivering how we engage members, government, employers, partners and the wider sector. Reporting to the General Manager, Performance and Impact, the role sets our communications direction, decides where effort goes, and advises the CEO and General Managers on how the Alliance’s positions and priorities are presented.

As our sole communications specialist, this is both a strategic and a hands-on role. The position is responsible for the annual communications plan, producing content across all our channels, running our digital presence, and leading campaigns from planning through to delivery. Working closely with teams across the organisation, the Head of Communications holds the standard for our voice and cultural integrity, ensuring everything we publish reflects our identity as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver the annual communications plan, setting priorities, audiences and key messages, and planning campaigns that support advocacy, membership growth and the Alliance’s profile.
  • Write, edit and produce content across all channels, including social media, newsletters, the website, media releases and member updates, and coordinate the annual report.
  • Manage the Alliance website, social media channels and email newsletters, and deliver media activity including releases, statements and spokesperson preparation.
  • Work with staff, members, partners, sponsors and media to gather content and build relationships, and manage external suppliers including designers, developers and agencies.
  • Maintain the brand guidelines, templates, approval processes, contact lists and content libraries that keep our communications consistent, culturally safe and easy for others to contribute to.

What we’re looking for

We are seeking an experienced communications professional who is passionate about using clear, credible communications to advance outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You will bring:

  • Relevant qualifications in communications, marketing, media, journalism, public policy or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Around 5 years’ experience in communications, covering content, digital channels and campaigns
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with demonstrated experience producing content for a range of audiences and channels
  • Demonstrated experience planning and delivering communications campaigns
  • Experience managing websites, social media channels and email newsletters, and drafting media releases
  • Strong cultural competency, with the judgement to handle First Nations stories, imagery and protocols respectfully
  • Practical skills with tools such as Canva, WordPress, email marketing platforms, Microsoft 365 and social media analytics
  • A practical, hands-on and organised approach, with the ability to manage competing priorities as a sole specialist
  • Experience working with First Nations organisations, or in a membership or not-for-profit setting, is highly valued

Why Join Us?

  • Be part of a supportive, culturally safe, and flexible workplace that values empowerment, culture, collaboration, unity, trust, and excellence.
  • Access employee benefits such as cultural leave, employee assistance program, and salary sacrifice arrangement ($15,900 + meal entertainment and holiday accommodation).
